Are shares bought in the US through brokers like Robinhood held in Demat accounts in the US? Or do they have some other concept?

The shares are maintained by the issuer electronically. The name of the stock holder is entered electronically in the issuer’s book. A physical certificate may be delivered if requested. If you are buying through brokerage firms like Robinhood then by default the stock issuer’s book are updated with broker’s name. This is called “in street name”, that is brokers hold it in their name on behalf of their client. So, technically in most cases the securities you buy are essentially held by the broker. You can request the broker to transfer the same into your name.
