I read somewhere that it is possible to sell stocks without owning/holding them, how does this work? What happens if I don’t buy them back by the end of the day? Thanks.

Its called as shorting and you can do it on intraday trades and in F&O.

What happens if I don’t buy them back by the end of the day?

In Intraday by 3:15 p.m. the stock will get auto squareoff bu the zerodha’s end and you will be levied by penalty of auto squareoff @ 50.rs + 18% gst on 50 rs.
