Trading Losses are often consolingly called “market tuition fees.”

However, since market variables are constantly changing, do accumulated losses actually translate to meaningful experience / lessons, or are they simply **Lost money**?

With constantly shifting market conditions and regulations, do losses truly build experience?

What’s your take: Yes or No?

I would say yes, but only if you actually learn from the losses. Market conditions have been shifting constantly, especially over the last couple of years, and I feel there’s been a lot more uncertainty since 2024. You can’t really avoid a bad trade, but keeping a note of what went wrong, why you took the trade, what changed and what actually caused the loss can make a huge difference over time…

If you are experiencing all these different market conditions early in your trading journey and actually tracking them, those losses can end up becoming pretty valuable experiences like tuition fees paid to the market…Otherwise, it’s just money lost 🙂

Long story short - yes, but you may NOT be successful and success can stop and one has to adapt and manage risk

* * *

Yes, but also there is no guarantee of anything. Worst case, lesson you get is that you cant do this.

That is why - **always pay less fee to market when you are learning** until you have clear cut proof that you have an edge. And then scale in steps. Start with something reasonable but small, make money, increase capital reasonably, make more money and so on. Get used to drawdowns, manage risk.

If you never find an edge, never scale up. I used to trade with 1 qty SBIN for some time.

We can have systems that continue to work for decade plus. I had couple of those and they worked for 6 and 4 years going forward too. But now may have ended. So we need to adapt and also manage risk and avoid hubris when things are going well.

Finally, if you get lucky - try to compound instead of spending it all. Else one becomes a slave to the market for income and markets are fickle.

To be profitable in Derivatives Trading, you need to tick a number of boxes and experience is only one of them.

Personally, I believe yes experience pays off but paying off doesn’t mean you turn profitable just because of experience.

Well said. Experience alone wasn’t a factor in being profitable according to the recent SEBI study on retail losses in derivatives market.

> [@Win Rate, Capital, Experience: What SEBI Found About F&O Traders](https://tradingqna.com/t/win-rate-capital-experience-what-sebi-found-about-f-o-traders/197266/1):

> ### Experience didn’t necessarily make traders better
>
> This is perhaps one of the more surprising findings.
>
> Among traders with one consecutive year of participation, around 91% were loss-makers. This increased to 94.4% after two years, 96% after three years and 96.5% after four years. Even among traders with five consecutive years of participation, around 95.3% had a cumulative loss.

> Simply spending more years in the market didn’t translate into better outcomes in this dataset.
>
> The report also found that among traders who had incurred losses in each of the previous two years and continued trading, around 90–92% lost money again in the following year. Among traders active throughout FY22–FY26, only 0.5% were profitable in all five years, while 65.6% incurred losses in every year.

i’d say pre-decide the tuition fees for such experience and by that i mean decide a fixed amount you can part with without loosing sleep,

say you want to take lessons, rather than risking it all on a single trade split it into 3-5 lessons or stoplosses,

hope that helps.

Loosing money can never be equated with the term Tuition fees, I think it sounds more like a justification for your losses and I think as a trader its a bad psychology. Yes it adds to your experience level but only if you are taking a small part of your capital as risks and loosing it. But the day the losses starts scaling up it is just poor financial planning, financial instability for a larger part of your life.

Yes, very stupid to scale up when you are not profitable. Trouble is market rewards in zig-zag way, so just back of short term profits people can be misled and make mistakes.

Need a lot of patience and common sense. And something that actually works in the market today.

While I agree, as per SEBI study, capital makes a difference. In general, large the capital, lesser the probability of losses.

While absolute amount might have increased, the percentage would still be small

We need to use some common sense when we interpret data.

Just increasing capital isn’t going to make anyone less likely to lose money all else being the same. People will lose more money instead. Its quite insane for an unproven trader to start trading with large capital, yet some do unfortunately.

Anyway, % of traders who lose money is very high. Anyone trying this should take it as a warning and don’t consider themselves special irrespective of successes elsewhere.

But also if you persevere through failures, windows of opportunity can be there to make good money.

Spoken like someone who never traded with lesser capital.

Have you traded it lesser capital ever, like less than 1L as the data says? When my capital increased I found it much easier to make money. Increased capital automatically opens up many opportunities and strategies and gives you buffer to even average down like Jason does. It’s also much easier psychologically as the damage wouldn’t matter as much. You really can’t do that with low initial capital. If you somehow attempt to do it with some strategies, the reward will be almost negligible for the effort you put in.
