How to compare a mutual fund with it's benchmark?

I am new in mutual funds and want to start investing but not in SIP. My first concern is how to compare mutual fund with its benchmark and what should be one’s strategy before buying Mutual funds. I want to invest money from 1 year to 5 years. Please suggest me.
