I am using Zerodha trader software. For example current price is 180. I want to buy it at 185(limit order) but it gets executed at current market price and it is not going into pending order list.
Ekansh,
If you place a limit order to buy at a higher price, it will buy at the best available price (market price).
If you want to buy at a price higher than current market price, use the stoploss orders to enter.
So in your case, Place a SL-M buy order with a trigger price of 185, so what will happen is that when market price goes to 185 the trigger gets hit and a market order to buy is sent out.
Check this blog for more on Stoploss orders.
If you want to buy at a price higher than what its trading at, you'll have to use a SL (Stop Loss) order. Assume stock is at 100 and you'd like to buy it at 104:
* Open the Buy order window by pressing F1
* Select the order type as 'SL-M'
* Enter the trigger price as 104
* Hit Submit to send the order to the Exchange.
What this does is until the stock price hits the trigger price you've mentioned, the order remains pending in the system. Once the stock hits the trigger (104 in the above example) a buy order at market price is sent to the Exchange.
Likewise if you want to sell at a price lower than what its trading at, use the SL/SL-M option.
In brief
You can read more on Stop Loss orders here.
Ekansh, if current price is 180, may I know the reason why do you want to Buy at 185?
Buying at 180 is always better than Buying at 185.
Sometimes in some stocks very rapid change in price occurs. It can be upwards or downwards. For ex- if price of a stock is 200 and when do not know when a huge buying or selling comes. Then if huge buying comes and price moves to 210 in few minutes and we have previously placed a buy order at 205.Then our profit will be (210-205) i.e. Rs.5 if we sell at 210. This strategy should be employed in those stocks where normally huge buying and selling comes and rest of the time the price remains stable.
Oh! got it now, Thanks. You are entering the trade when volatility is high and exiting it when it stabilizes again, Cool!, basically scalping!
