Goal: Generate ~1% per month (₹40,000) on options selling with controlled risk.
Capital & margin:

Total capital: ~₹50L

Pledged holdings: ₹25L in equity & ₹25L in liquid funds.

Usable F&O margin after haircuts: ~₹40L

Target:
Monthly return: ~1% on margin used (₹40k/month)

Max monthly drawdown: 2% of capital (₹1L)

Constraints & preferences:

Primarily index options (Nifty/Bank Nifty), non-directional or mildly directional. I prefer options selling.

Overnight positions OK, but want to avoid gap-risk blowups

Willing to hedge (spreads/condors/iron flies, etc.)

Can monitor trades intraday, but not scalping every minute

What I’m looking for:

Practical strategies/setups that have historically delivered ~1%/month with ≤2% monthly drawdown on this size of capital

Position sizing & risk rules (per trade, per day, per week)

How you’d structure hedges and adjustments to keep drawdowns within 2%/month

Any backtest data / live P&L logs / rule-sets you follow for similar goals

I have about 3 years of trading experience, I’m profitable but not making consistent money.

I’m okay with weekly vs monthly expiries.

I can commit full time to trading.

Let me know if you need further information. So, how do I generate 1% per month from options selling with less than 2% drawdown.

This assumes you’re using all of your available margin for short premium. 🧐
But 1% per month on overall capital is a realistic expectation. ✅
The danger comes from over-leveraging, i.e., trading too many contracts, even if they’re far OTM. ⚠

Use VIX based position sizing

> [@Can we really earn in nifty short straddle positional trading](https://tradingqna.com/t/can-we-really-earn-in-nifty-short-straddle-positional-trading/197340/6):
>
> Make sure you’re not over-leveraged. spades Mr. Rao in the video says no more than 1.5x leverage but IMHO it’s too low to earn a meaningful ROC. I would recommend to follow Tasty’s VIX based position sizing. white_check_mark

You may use these as non-directional strats depending on IV:

- Low IV: double calendar or double diagonal
- Medium: Iron condor
- High: Strangle

Personally I stick to strangles at 45-90 DTE as it’s easier to manage, targeting at least 5% return on margin used. 💹
Standard Tasty mechanics for management:

- Roll or manage at 21 DTE or 50% credit received, whichever comes first
- May consider closing out the whole trade if losses reach 200% credit received.
- Keep deltas in check by adjusting - this is more an art than something with hard rules.

On diversification:

- Tasty recommends diversifying among bonds, equities, commodities and currency. 📜🪙🛢🔥💵
- This is not really possible with the current Indian market conditions due to low/no liquidity or regulatory blocks (f.e. currency derivatives). 🫗
- When trading a single product, you can diversify among different DTEs. F.e. when trading only Nifty you can choose 30, 60, 90 DTEs and roll/manage the trade at the midpoint of the contract duration. This is not as good as _real_ diversification among different asset classes but it should help! 🗓

Thanks, this helps especially the idea of using longer dated options.
I take leverage of 2 to 2.5x.
I don’t use all my margin at once. On a monthly basis, to calculate the return I consider as if the entire margin were used. I don’t calculate return only on the deployed capital (margin blocked). Position sizing using vix chart is interesting. I stop trading if vix reaches 35+.

For ₹50L capital, I’d focus on defined-risk NIFTY option-selling strategies like iron condors and credit spreads rather than naked selling. Target around ₹40–50k/month
, but don’t force that target every month.

Keep risk small: roughly ₹15–20k maximum per trade, ₹10–15k daily loss limit, and ₹25–30k weekly loss limit. Use far OTM hedges for overnight positions and reduce exposure during major events.

Most importantly, don’t utilise the entire ₹40L margin just because it’s available. Your goal should be consistent returns with low drawdown, not maximum margin utilisation.

</div>

I’d separate the return target from the risk target first. Aiming for 1% a month while strictly limiting drawdown to 2% sounds reasonable on paper, but options selling can have relatively frequent small gains and occasional outsized losses, especially with overnight gap risk.

With ₹50L capital, I’d focus less on finding a strategy that “generates 1%” and more on designing a system where a bad month is survivable.

A few rules I’d consider:

- Risk only a small, predefined fraction of capital on each position rather than sizing based on available margin.
- Prefer defined-risk spreads/condors over naked option selling if the 2% drawdown limit is genuinely hard.
- Keep sufficient unused margin for volatility expansion and avoid deploying the entire ₹40L.
- Define the maximum loss before entering, including what happens if the market gaps beyond the planned adjustment level.
- Set a portfolio-level loss limit. Once that limit is reached, stop initiating new trades rather than trying to recover the loss.
- Backtest with realistic slippage, brokerage, taxes, spreads and difficult volatility regimes—not just historical closing prices.

I’d also question whether 1% every month should be treated as a required objective. A strategy that averages 1% over a long sample but occasionally loses 4–5% may not satisfy someone whose actual requirement is ≤2% monthly drawdown.

The more useful backtest would therefore be something like: CAGR/average monthly return, worst month, maximum drawdown, consecutive losing months, tail losses, and performance during high-VIX/gap periods.

In other words, build the risk framework first and let the return be the output. Trying to force the portfolio to produce ₹40k every month can itself lead to overtrading when the market isn’t offering suitable setups.

Monthly 2% to 3% is possible in a safe manner using hedging.

Step 1: You have to buy NIFTYBEES .

Step 2: You have to take monthly put spread.

Step 3: If NIFTYBEES rallies , there are multiple ways to make the put spread no loss…

Step 4: Repeat.

Whenever markets correct you get money. Long term market will go up only.

Sharing a few thoughts
(mostly beyond what’s been directly asked and already been discussed in this topic-thread),
with a hope that it helps more comprehensively reason about the stated goal.

Is there any reason to expect that such a system/strategy can exist?
Conventional wisdom states that even if one were to exist,
it will be short-lived and arbitrated away by better positioned market participants in a popular market.
Thus, requiring one to constantly/frequently tweak one’s system or seek new strategies and experiment.

> ℹ For a better chance of finding such an opportunity/system, especially one that is relatively long-lived,
> can maybe explore unpopular niche markets/instruments, especially ones ignored by better equipped/funded market participants, especailly at the volumes one is looking to invest/trade.

Next, in whatever system/strategy one ends-up deploying,
**IF** there is NO consistent 1-2% to be made in the market for a certain **extended** period,
then
**a**. how fast would one’s system detect it?
**b**. while one’s system realises/detects it, how much would one’s losses be?

Without knowing the limits of a strategy,
even someone who is “consistently profitable”
is only “living on borrowed time”, potentially even waiting to be wiped-out
by any of the assumptions behind the strategy/system becoming false (even momentarily).

Basically in search of a consistent wrapper
around a known fundamentally inconsistent underlying
what are the risks one is exposing oneself to?
**c**. …how one can sufficiently mitigate/hedge those risks? (if at all possible)
**d**. …and is one sufficiently profitable AFTER the mitigations/hedges?

> [@AnushaSagar](#):
>
> I can commit full time to trading.

**e**. Are the returns from the above system worth the time/attention one needs to invest,
or does one have any opportunities to engage in alternate productive activities with one’s time
that provide higher returns (or with better chances of such returns) for the time/effort invested in them?

in china , people breakdown an imported product to see how it was manufactured. This is called reverse engineering.

in stock trading, you can do the same. See what moved, then analyze what caused it to move, then back-test.

How about thinking radically different ?

Is monthly max drawdown 2% is absolutely non-negotiable? If not, possibly there is one more avenue.

Long -short equity SIF. By design they are allowed shorts, f&O strategies (with limitations though), and has possibility to generate positive CAGR in both bull and bear market.

The minimum ticket size is 10L.

You can study every AMCs long short SIF offering. The one which has strategy close to your thought process, put 10L there and watch for a market cycle how it is performing.

If on an average SIF returning close to 1% per month across the market cycles , and one dont have to pay the taxes for the strategies deployed by fund house… I would think, its better deal.

yes. yes thats why I asked

> [@RajendraPatil](#):

Let me explain my view point

I believe a team of experts may be able to perform slightly better than an individual, at least when it comes to long-term risk management. Additionally, there is no short-term or long-term capital gains tax levied on every individual trade within an SIF.

Therefore, in my opinion, even after accounting for all costs, there is a fair chance that an SIF will deliver slightly better returns in the long run than the average individual trader—all without the need to monitor the markets every single day.

> [@pavinjoseph](#):
>
> Similar DDs to their MFs

Yes, but at least there is a possibility. There are SIFs that perform badly during a slow decline month after month, and there are SIFs that perform badly during a sharp crash in a single month, depending on the strategies the SIF is going to deploy. In my opinion, SIF managers are candid and clearly explain the strategies they intend to use in their presentations.

This is probably true for the majority of investors, we’ll just have to wait a few years to see how SIFs perform. ⏳

So far it’s the best performing SIF (30%+ YTD) but the data is limited since it launched in April '26. 🙈

Sure.. But one can now also pledge sifs and trade, to add some % extra (for profitable traders with positive expectancy) 🙃
