Why do we have two of them? Is it to have competition to encourage better services. If so why dont we have more than two?

Yep it is to have competition and improve services. Depositories don’t really earn too much revenue, especially in times like the last 5 years where there has hardly been any activity. Their main source of revenue is the flat Rs 5 they make everytime someone sells shares from their demat. If there is a really big bull markets in the future, there might be more depositories.
No advantage of one over the other.
