And here’s another striking finding: the BIS research shows that the cross-country co-movement of government bond yields and corporate spreads has increased significantly in recent years. When we look at financial market connectedness measures – essentially how much of market movements can be explained by transmission across countries rather than domestic factors – we see that over 60% of risk factor variability could be explained by global connectedness during the pandemic.

Such unprecedented times, with multiple factors at all-time-highs in various aspects of the financial system, are sure to give even the most seasoned investors vertigo.
