Equity markets were in free fall on Friday with both Nifty and Sensex plunging around 1.5%, closing at three-month lows. For the week, markets were down by over 2%, dragged down by Banking, Energy and Metal indices.







Things to watch out for in the coming week;

International Holding Co, an Abu Dhabi-based multinational conglomerate, will invest $400 million in Adani Enterprises Ltd’s FPO. IHC will make the investment through its subsidiary Green Transmission Investment Holding RSC Limited.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries announced the acquisition of three anti-inflammatory brands from Mumbai-based Aksigen Hospital Care on Monday. As part of the transaction, the company acquired Disperzyme, Disperzyme-CD, and Phlogam.

Apple sold 2 million iPhones in India in the fourth quarter of 2022, indicating an 18% growth (QoQ) for its flagship smartphone. The market share of iPhones in India reached 5.5% in 2022, an 11% rise (YoY).

The French automaker Renault will reduce its stake in partner Nissan from 43% to 15%. The action is a part of an agreement that will rebalance the bumpy relationship between the two companies.

India’s eight core industrial sectors rose by 7.4% in December 2022, up from 3.8% the previous year, according to provisional data by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

India’s fiscal deficit for the nine months ending in December was 9.93 trillion rupees, roughly 60% of annual estimates, according to government data released on Tuesday. While total expenditure reached 28.18 trillion rupees, net tax receipts increased to 15.56 trillion rupees.

Adani Enterprises Ltd’s follow-on share offer was fully subscribed on the last day of the 20,000 crore issue. Investors sought at least 4.62 crore shares in response to the offer of 4.55 crore shares.

Hindustan Zinc Ltd, a Vedanta group company, announced that it plans to invest USD 1 billion over the next five years in switching its 900-odd mining vehicles from diesel to battery-operated.

Vedanta Ltd. has ditched plans to sell its copper smelter in Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India that produced close to 40% of the nation’s copper, and has stepped up its efforts to restart the plant.
The International Monetary Fund maintained its growth forecast for FY23, citing India as a bright spot in the global economy. According to the World Economic Outlook for January 2023, India’s GDP is expected to be 6.8% in FY23.

The IMF estimates that inflation in India will reduce from 6.8% in the current fiscal year ending March 31 to 5% the following fiscal year, and then to 4% in 2024.

Authorities collected up to Rs 1.56 lakh crore in indirect taxes in January, according to a finance ministry statement, the second-highest collection ever and a 24% jump over the previous year.

Gautam Adani took charge of Haifa Port in the presence of PM, Benjamin Netanyahu. He said that his group has built significant partnerships in Israel, including with Elbit Systems, Israel Weapon Systems, and Israel Innovation Authority, and will continue to invest in the country.

Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest automaker, recorded a 12% increase in total sales in January, totaling 1,72,535 vehicles. Total domestic passenger vehicle sales were 1,55,142 units, a 14% increase.

The U.S. Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and Bank of England are all expected to hike interest rates when they present their first policy announcements of 2023. The Fed is likely to raise rates by another 25 basis points, while the ECB is expected to hike rates by 50 bps.

Adani Enterprises announced that it will withdraw its fully subscribed Rs 20,000-crore follow-on public offer (FPO) and return the proceeds to investors.

Start-ups selling shares at a premium to foreign investors have to pay higher taxes, which may impact local enterprises that are private in raising funds. The government has proposed to include transactions involving overseas investors in the angel tax regulations.

The government is expected to sell a portion of its residual stake in Hindustan Zinc Ltd by the end of next month in order to meet the revised sell-off target of Rs 50,000 crore for the current fiscal year: Department of Investment and Public Asset Management

Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett’s investment firm, cut its stake in electric vehicle maker BYD by selling 1.55 million Hong Kong-listed shares for $44.85 million.

The FMCG saw slower growth of 7.6% in the October - December 2022 quarter compared to the year-ago period on the back of weak volumes.

NCLT has barred Reliance Capital’s lenders from staging a 2nd auction of its assets, calling it an unlawful technique. The tribunal asked Reliance Capital to close the resolution process. With an offer of Rs 8,640 cr, Torrent Investments was the top bidder in the auction.

The ECB and the Bank of England both raised key interest rates by 50 bps, with the former indicating further hikes and the latter suggesting rates may shortly peak. Bank of England also projected a “shallower” recession than previously predicted.

Shell, the British oil and gas company, made $39.9 billion in 2022. Meanwhile, nearly 13,000 Nigerians filed a lawsuit against Shell in a London high court over the company’s impact on the environment and their lives.
