Here’s how the markets fared in the first week of the new year;

Indian markets kicked off the new year negatively, with Nifty down by around 1.3% and Sensex by about 1.55% for the week.

Apart from minor gains in FMCG Pharma and Auto indices, all sectoral indices closed the week in the red. IT, Media and Services were the top losers, each down by around 2.8%.

Paytm’s loan disbursals stood at 3.7 million loans with Rs. 3,665 crores growing at 330% YoY year-on-year (YoY) in December 2022.

India’s thermal coal imports which are mainly used for power generation surged by 14.7% to 161.18 million tonnes in 2022 on account of higher domestic production and shipments by utilities

JSPL, which recently acquired debt-laden Monnet power for Rs. 410 crores will be investing up to Rs 1,500 crore to make recently-acquired Monnet Power operational over the next 12-18 months as per its MD Bimlendra Jha.

As per rating agency ICRA, gross corporate bond issuance by banks is expected to rise further to Rs 1.3-1.4 lakh crore in the financial year 2023, thanks to a pick-up in credit growth.

ONGC Videsh has re-taken a 20% stake in the Sakhalin-1 oil and gas fields, which currently produce 1,40,000-1,50,000 BPD and which used to produce 220,000 barrels per day of oil before the Ukraine war after the exit of ExxonMobil.

General insurance premiums increased by 13% YoY in December while overall premiums rose by 16% in FY23. Whereas Standalone health insurance companies in the month of December have grown their premium by 23% YoY with 26% YoY in the current fiscal as a whole.

Apple has already surpassed the previous year’s exports within the first 9 months of the current fiscal and has exported more than $2.5 billion of iPhones from India from April to December showing a growth of nearly 100% YoY.

The Swiss National Bank posted the biggest ever annual loss in its 115-year history at $143 billion in 2022 on account of share and bond portfolio losses due to falling stock and fixed-income markets.

Tata Motors rose 6% after the company announced a 13% rise in global wholesales in Q3FY23 at 3,22,556 units, and its subsidiary JLR is likely to generate more than $485 million in free cash flow for the quarter owing to strong demand and improved chip supply.

India’s fuel consumption grew at 3.1% YoY in December to 19.60 million tonnes, while gasoline sales increased by 5.9% to 2.98 million tonnes. Sales of cooking gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) rose 3.9% to 2.58 million tonnes: Petroleum Analysis and Planning Cell.

Indian rupee climbed to a fresh one-month high against the dollar on Tuesday on expectations that the US Federal Reserve could change its hawkish stance.

China’s passenger car sales rose 2.4% in December as the economy reopened following Covid-related lockdowns, and buyers also hurried to take advantage of an electric vehicle (EV) subsidy before it expired.

Private-equity company Carlyle Group has acquired a majority stake in VLCC, a provider of beauty care and wellness products, for roughly $300 million.

Startups in India got $24 billion in funding in calendar 2022, a 33% reduction from CY21 but still more than twice the funds raised in CY20 and CY19, as per PwC India.

Reliance is planning to disrupt the live-streaming market with free IPL broadcasts, according to sources. Viacom18, a Reliance venture, spent Rs 23,758 crore last year for digital media rights to the 2023-2027 IPL seasons.

SEBI has approved index derivatives contracts based on corporate debt securities rated AA+ and above. They must provide a detailed proposal, along with the underlying index, methodology, contract specifications, risk management, and trading, clearing, and settlement process.

Mercedes-Benz India and BMW India expect twofold EV growth. Mercedes-Benz India expects them to count for 25% of its India sales over the next 4 years, while BMW expects them to account for 10% of sales in the near future since buyers in luxury segments are less price-sensitive.

The US has emerged as the top destination for Indian refined petroleum products, with a big share of it made from cheap crude oil imported by Russia. In November, Russia exported crude oil worth $3.08 bn to India, making it the country’s 2nd largest exporter behind Saudi Arabia.

Apple Inc. plans to start using its own custom screens in mobile devices as early as 2024 as part of a move to raise the number of components produced in-house and lower its dependence on suppliers like Samsung and LG.

India’s CPI inflation eased to 5.72% in December 2022 from 5.88% in November 2022.

Wheat production in the country is expected to exceed 112 million tonnes in the 2022-23 crop year (July-June). According to agriculture ministry data, wheat production fell to 106.84 million tonnes in the 2021-22 crop year due to a heat wave in key growing states.

The biggest contract manufacturer of processor chips for smartphones and other products, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., reported a 78% rise in quarterly earnings over the same period last year but predicted weak demand this year.

OTPC said that it had signed a deal to develop a battery energy storage project in Assam for Rs. 2,000 crores. The MoU with APDCL was signed in Guwahati to establish a joint venture to build a battery energy storage system project with a capacity of up to 250 MW/500 MWh in Assam.

Tata Group plans to build an electric vehicle cell factory in Europe. The Indian conglomerate wants to use its Jaguar Land Rover subsidiary to build a factory in Europe from which it would sell battery packs globally and use them to speed the British carmaker’s shift to cleaner engines.

Alibaba Group sold a 3.1% stake in Paytm in a block deal for $125 million on Thursday. Shares of the company fell as low as 8.8% to 528 rupees in afternoon trade and were down 6.21% at 3:30 p.m. IST.

India’s factory output grew to a 5-month high in November, owing primarily to a favorable base effect, while retail inflation fell to a 12-month low in December. CPI was 5.72% in December, falling short of the RBI’s upper tolerance limit of 6% for the second month in a row.

Shares of Jet Airways surged by 5% after the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) granted Jalan-Kalrock Consortium six more months to complete payment and acquire effective control of the airline.

India’s banking regulator is open to the idea of European banks operating government securities trading and custody operations through locally formed non-bank entities, despite the conflict between the RBI and the European Securities and Markets Authority.

The government has seized about 18,600 toys from stores, including those run by notable companies like Hamleys, Archies, and WH Smith, due to the lack of the BIS quality mark. Even Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal have been involved in selling toys without the proper certification.

Anu Aiyengar of JPMorgan Chase & Company will be the only head of global mergers and acquisitions, making her the first woman to head the franchise at a major Wall Street bank.
