29 Years of Nifty

Yesterday, Nifty50 celebrated its 29th anniversary, marking nearly three decades of tracking India’s largest companies. Launched in 1996, it remains one of the most recognised and liquid benchmarks for Indian equities.

The Index has come a long way, starting at 1,000 and recently crossing 26,000. It shows how much our economy has grown, and hopefully, it keeps going. It offers a diversified view of 50 of the largest Indian companies, covering major sectors like Financials, IT, Oil & Gas, Consumer Goods, and Automobiles that drive the economy.

For those looking to track the market, or maybe just looking for a simple yet effective strategy (yes, let’s call it a “strategy” to make it sound fancy), an index fund could be the way to go.

Not advice, just sharing thoughts. Do your own homework…
Investment is subject to market risks, so always read the fine print (and maybe a few books or Varsity too) before diving in.

So, 29 years of Nifty.

What was the level of Nifty when you first heard about it or started investing? And what do yu think the next 29 years will look like? Take a guess, dare to predict. :grimacing:

One factor which people miss out in index fund or etf is that every year there is a rejig of the portfolio so only the top 50 remains. So kind of unfair to say its passive investing

It would be interesting to see the composition of nifty 50 when it started off. Are there any company from day 1 till date still there.

Need to check on this

The names are
Reliance, hdfc, icici bank, tata motors, l&t, sbi, itc, unilever, tata steel, hindalco, bajaj auto

Quite happy i have 7 out of the 11 stocks.

Here’s the composition of Sensex in 1979

I started my journey in the markets back in 2018 when Nifty was around 10,800. I still remember the dramatic fall to 7,511 during the Covid crash it was a surreal experience watching the markets react like that. Since then, it’s been an incredible ride, with Nifty touching 26,200 last year.

What really fascinates me is how much the markets have evolved. I’m especially curious to know where Nifty was when @nithin and @nikhilkamath began their trading journey. It would be amazing to hear their stories and the kind of market environment they witnessed back then.

Indeed, I’m also curious to know @nithin, when did you start?

I presume it should at least reach the 2 lakh mark by the time I retire in the next 20 years.

Back in 2021, Nifty was arond the 14k level when I acutally started investng, and Tata Motors was my frst invesment. Been a good way frm where I startd. Cant imagin where we’ll be in the nxt 29 yrs.

Around 1000.

The market has had many busts, but the good thing is that it has generally been a bull market. So anyone playing long (buy) the market would have done quite well over the last 25+ years.
