₹54 crore . . .. . ..

₹54 crore.

That’s all that separated India’s favourite supermarket from a scooter-and-warehouse app this quarter.

DMart sales, July to September: ₹19,206 cr
Blinkit sales, July to September: ₹19,152 cr

A year ago, Blinkit was at ₹9,891 cr. Barely 61% of DMart.

Growth in one year:
DMart: +18%
Blinkit: +94%

But look at how differently they got here.

DMart has 518 stores, built over 24 years since its first one opened in Powai.
Each store sells about ₹37 cr a quarter.

Blinkit has 2,751 small warehouses you can’t walk into, and opened 308 of them in just 3 months.
Each one sells about ₹7 cr a quarter.

And what each keeps from every ₹100 of sales:
DMart: about ₹7.30
Blinkit: about ₹1

DMart is cheap because you drive to it. Blinkit is fast because it drives to you.

Whoever does the travelling pays for it.

The festive quarter comes next. By December, who’s bigger: the store you go to, or the store that comes to you?

They have 500 big warehouse (supermarket ) with them , create an delivery app and give cute name like
Rupemart (Rupee + Dmart) - or some thing interesting
then use exiting supermarket to deliver within 10 Min to near by area . No extra big investment required . They can beat the competition now , not later

They do home delivery. Dmart ready

From the infographic

Dmart is cheaper than blinkit because the delivery is not done , they have better margin because of this .
Wondering Even with delivery option , Why Dmart sales lesser than Blinkit

  1. Blinkit have more stores near to customers
  2. Blinkit delivery is faster ?
  3. Blinkit have better quality of product (like vegetables) than Dmart
  4. Blinkit pricing less than Dmart

I am from remote area so not sure how Dmart work and don’t have access to any of the high end super market or 10 Min delivery app.

Marketing is also probably a big factor. Zomato can monetize it’s existing base into Blinkit. In addition, assuming the infographic is true, this is total sales, they are probably burning cash(deep discounts) for user acquisition and it is not net profitable. Just typical Jio playbook - burn through cash for user acquisition and competition destruction and get money decades later over many years when there’s no one left to compete.

If someone can answer this-

Zomato market cap- 3 lakh crore

Swiggy market cap- 50k crore

Why eternal is 6x in market cap?
