Can a registered partnership firm open a Demat/FNO Trading account in its own name?

Hi. My partners and I are considering registering a partnership firm for trading futures and options. We are 4 persons owning 25% each. Can a partnership firm open a trading account in its own name (and not in one designated person’s name)?

Information available on the internet seems confusing, with some sources saying yes while others suggesting otherwise. Please help, thanks.

Yes you can open trading account in the name of partnership, but demat account only in the authorized persons name. Maybe better also to consult a CA

Ok, thanks. We do not need a demat account. It’s confusing because trading and demat account are typically the same for an individual at least. We’ll certainly be consulting a CA, just figuring out if it’s possible.

Not exactly, but yeah one can open just trading account also, with zerodha demat is mandatory though for these reasons.

Sorry but I’m confused again. If I want to open a Zerodha account, can I do the both of these at the same time?

  • Open a Zerodha trading account in the Partnership’s name.
  • For the trading account, open a demat account in a designated partner’s name. This will almost certainly never be used, because no stocks will ever be bought.

Because if the trading account is not in the partnership’s name, there is really no point of opening one.

Yes you can, @Maan
