Can you file a claim with two health insurance policies for a single hospitalization?

A common question a lot of people have while making a health insurance claim is:

“If I have two health insurance policies, can I claim both for a single hospitalization?”

The answer is: Yes!

Here’s an explainer by @Ditto_Insurance

If you’re someone who likes to stay prepared, chances are you have two or more base health policies–maybe from different insurers or a mix of group and individual covers.

Now, what if one day your medical bill exceeds the sum assured of your primary policy. What happens next?

You can rely on your second policy to cover the remaining amount. But here’s the catch.

You can’t file claims with both insurers simultaneously. You can do it only one after the other so that you don’t end up paying for the same expense twice.

For example: Imagine you’re admitted. You make a cashless claim from your 1st insurer who directly pays your hospital. Now, the claim settlement letter may take some time. So, you’ll have to clear the leftover bill from your own pocket.

However, as the letter comes, you can submit it to your 2nd insurer along with the bill and other documents–requesting a reimbursement claim. This way, you don’t end up paying any amount from your pocket even if the bill exceeds your sum assured.

Also, if your 1st policy requires you to co-pay, you can also get that amount reimbursed from the 2nd policy, depending on the insurer.

In case anyone has two policy do consider this before making a claim.

pre existing condition waiting period is around 4 years. Hence if anyone has two policy, and if this was taken recent, do check this period before making a claim. If the policy has run for more than 4 years then Insurance Co cannot reject based on pre existing condition.

yes but make sure you intimate both companies within the first 48-72hrs post admission; else for the second one they’ll reject saying you did not inform.

PED waiting period varies from one company to another. but an interesting part is we can reduce this PED waiting period to 1 year in most policies. It does not cost much but only useful if one has a pre-existing disease.

@Ditto_Insurance Can you create post about International Travel Insurance ?

yes but there is a problem that if both companies are registered with same TPA than second claim will be rejected.
