Whoa! there is a “commercial technological ecosystem” built around EPFO/UAN and PAN-linked data??!! is nothing sacrosanct anymore?

“these entities are commercially exploiting the sensitive income tax and provident fund records of millions of Indians.” … bummer if true.

I’m a bit of a data-privacy fundamentalist on this one: if you don’t need the data, you shouldn’t have it. And if you do need it, you should have a very good reason, clear purpose, informed consent & very strong guardrails. A timely intervention by the SC which forces us to ask a much bigger question: where does legitimate verification end & unacceptable intrusion begin?

Privacy is a joke in India. Many institutions already have most of the citizen’s aadhar number and copies. I wouldn’t be surprised if they recorded biometric data whenever citizens authenticate. In all probability, biometric data itself would leaked/hacked directly from UIDAI by multiple organisations and foreign governments. People are too poor to care.
