I have bought 1000 stocks of coal India at 327. However I did not book loss before 31st march. If I book loss after April 1st 2016 can this loss be offsetted with fy 2016_17 profits?
Check this module on taxation. You can either consider the closing price as on 31th march to determine profitability, or you can consider the actual profit/loss on the day you exit the holdings. But whatever method you follow, be consistent.
