P&L will be affected considering how it get taxed. Bonus shares cost would be considered “0” plus if you sell your bonus share less than a year it will be taxed at 20% rate. Thus, you would be losing your hard earned money. Period.

I have 18 shares of BAJFINANCE with avg. cost Rs. 6347 holding more than a year.

Here is the Math:
I) I sell my 18 shares at Rs. 9446 my profit less LTCG would translate to Rs. 48809.25
a. BAJFINANCE trading at Rs. 9446 (as of 12-06-2025 12:21 p.m.)
b. My profit (9446-6347)*18 =55782
c. LTCG (9446-6347)18.125 = 6972.75
d. net profit (profit - LTCG) 55782 - 6972.75 = 48809.25

II) I sell my 18 shares after 4:1 bonus (for simplicity I ignored the split 1:2 split as mathematically no effect) would be as follows:
a. My original shares buy avg. cost is 6347
b. My bonus shares cost is 0
c. Bonus share price is 9446/4 = 2361.50 i.e. market price divided by four bonus provided for every single share held
d. Profit less LTCG on my original 18 share: (2361.50 - 6347)*18 = -71739
i.e. (market price - cost price) *quantity (note: it is negative, thus, wouldn’t be taxed but could carry forward or adjust against profit during tax returns).
e. Profit less STCL on my 54 bonus shares (2361.50 - 0)*54 - ((2361.50 - 0)*54 *.20) = 102016.8
f. net adjusted profit (LTCG of original shares + STCL of bonus shares) -71739 + 102016.8 = 30277.80
g. net loss selling my entire BAJFINANCE share after bonus received 30277.80 - 48809.25 = -18531.45 i.e. I only get Rs. 30277.80 as supposed to Rs. 48809.25

Conclusion: I lose Rs 18,531 due to bonus. Bonus here is, actually, penalizing small retail investors. It is better to sell now and buy back once adjusted share price post bonus issue.
