What is a Bonus Issue?
A bonus issue is a method companies use to reward their shareholders by issuing additional shares at no extra cost to them. Although the number of shares increases, the total investment value remains unchanged because the share price gets adjusted proportionally to the bonus ratio. This adjustment should not be confused with a correction or a fall in the market price.
Example:
If you held 10 shares of HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd (HDFCAMC) priced at ₹2678 each, a 1:1 bonus issue will give you 10 additional shares. You will now hold 20 shares, and the price will adjust to approximately ₹1339 per share. Even with the adjusted price, the total investment value remains the same at ₹26,780.
Who is eligible for the bonus issue?
Investors who hold or purchase HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd (HDFCAMC) shares on or before the ex-date, November 25, 2025, will qualify to receive the bonus shares. The shares must be credited to the demat account by the record date, November 26, 2025.
When will the bonus shares reflect in my demat account?
Bonus shares are typically credited to the demat account within 2 trading days from the record date. They may first appear under a temporary ISIN and will take another 4–5 working days to be assigned a permanent ISIN. After that, they will reflect in Kite and be available for trading.
What happens to my holdings and P&L on Kite and Console after the ex-date?
After the ex-date, the share price will be adjusted as per the bonus ratio, which may temporarily show a drop in P&L. Once the bonus shares are credited, the holdings will reflect the increased quantity, and the buy average price will be recalculated and updated automatically. OHLC charts on Kite are also adjusted to reflect such corporate actions.
Why has my average price dropped after the bonus issue?
Bonus shares are allotted at zero cost. When they are added to the demat account, the original investment cost is divided across the total number of shares post-bonus. This reduces the average buy price but does not reduce the total investment value.
Can I sell my shares before the bonus shares are credited?
Yes, you can sell your shares if you choose to. Bonus eligibility is determined solely by the number of shares held on the record date, November 26, 2025. Selling shares before the credit does not affect bonus allotment.
