F&O Trading Addiction

Hi,

This is not something related to trading advice, but I genuinely need help understanding how we can control the behaviour of someone who has become addicted to F&O options trading.

My sibling has been addicted to F&O options trading for around 7 years and has lost approximately ₹50 lakhs during this period.

Almost all of this money has ultimately come from me — through loans I have taken and from my salary. We are not a financially well-off family. We have struggled throughout our childhood, and we don’t even own a house or any property. Every rupee we have today has come from years of hard work and sacrifice.

Last October, my sibling lost another ₹10 lakhs. We managed to pay ₹5 lakhs, and ₹5 lakhs was still remaining. At that point, we somehow felt a little relieved, thinking, “Okay, only ₹5 lakhs is left. Maybe somehow he can manage this.”

But it happened again.

Recently, when he got ₹1 lakh into his account, he couldn’t resist the urge to trade options. He initially made a profit of around ₹6 lakhs. Instead of stopping there and being grateful that he had recovered some money, his greed took over. He continued trading and eventually lost around ₹10 lakhs.

He then started taking loans from small finance/loan apps such as Navi and others to cover the losses.

I genuinely don’t understand how this can keep happening.

We are hardworking people. We had an extremely difficult childhood. We kept telling ourselves that one day, after getting jobs and becoming financially stable, life would finally become a little easier. When I started working, I thought that at least our struggles were finally coming to an end.

But since the beginning of my job, this has been happening.

Initially, the losses were ₹10,000, ₹20,000, ₹50,000 or ₹1 lakh. We somehow managed to deal with them. But now the amounts have reached ₹10 lakhs in a single episode.

Last time, as a final warning, we blocked his demat account. I have been monitoring his loans, credit bills and financial transactions every week. He knows exactly how much damage this has caused our family. He knows how hard we have worked for this money.

And yet he did it again.

How do we stop this behaviour?

What can I possibly do apart from checking his phone, monitoring his loans and blocking his demat accounts?

Even if we close one demat account, he simply opens another one with another broker. Is there any way to permanently prevent him from opening or using trading accounts?

This isn’t just about losing money anymore. It is destroying our entire family emotionally and financially.

₹5 lakhs is not a small amount for us. Its almost a year’s worth of hard-earned money for me, my father and my mother. We don’t have savings or property that we can fall back on. We have already spent years struggling to reach a point where we thought we could finally live without constantly worrying about money.

Now we are back in the same situation again.

Mandate professional psychiatric help! In the mean time, cut off all transfers - don’t fund and don’t bail him out - you’re only enabling this behavior! Be clear, there will be no more “we”, if he opens another account or doesn’t get professional help. There is no point helping a person who does not want to be helped. They will only take you down with them.

Sceptic.
High chances the OP is prepping for a tool seller here

Is there any mechanism under toprevent him from accessing and opening trading accounts from different platforms? restricting or blocking from PAN level?

Couple of approaches come to mind.

  • Declaring the individual insolvent/bankrupt.
  • Appointing a legal/financial guardian for the individual.

Can search about these approaches online and review the nuances/challenges involved.
Often non-financial implications/challenges may end-up being a deciding factor.

Meanwhile,
please continue to take great care of your own physical/mental/financial health,
to ensure that you are in a position to support/help
those in need / those who depend on you for the near foreseeable future.

Who gives loans without income ?

If money is coming from you first, why you give him money at all ?
If not, any app that gives such loans deserves to be defaulted on.

math not mathing. 1L of own money, 6L profit, 10L lost. If he made more money, why mention 6L at all ?

I don’t know how these apps work, but if you dont pay, his credit score should go down and that should prevent future loans, no ?

Insensitive reply, but if he is causing so much harm to family, throw him out for a week. Happens again throw him out for 2 weeks etc. Provide food money. Maybe make him do manual labor or something.

How many times does he have to do it, if he wants to be disowned permanently?

Assuming OP doesnt pay off his loans, it probably wont come to that. Who will give loan with bad CR ?

Anyway, something like this only they can decide, even whether to throw out. But if family member is indeed hell bent on destroying family finances, at some point, some extreme measure is probably needed. Maybe some jail time could be good, if he breaks some laws to fund his ‘addicition’ to losing money.

Anyway, like Vijay, i have some doubts on this whole thing. Lets hope, we suddenly dont get some wall of AI text advertising a solution to this problem.

1 lakh was transferred to him to repay a pending loan, so instead of repaying loan he did trade again , got 6 lakhs profit, didn’t stop there out of greed did more trade eventually lost 6 lakhs and then again he didn’t stop there, took loan of 5 lakhs and did trade again and lost again 5 lakhs. Now the loan repayment was not done of 1 lakh + again a new loan of 5 lakhs.

How is he getting loan ? He gets his salary 50k every month and CIBIL score is 758.
Because all the loans were cleared with my help in the past.
Once all are cleared, he takes loans again, do trading, loss, repay and repeat and that is continuing in loop.

I hope some solution comes to this because I definitely there are many families suffering because of this addiction.

Dont payoff his loan then. That is the solution.

Why does SEBI/NSE doesn’t give us the authority to block a PAN from trading as a individual guardian? That would be really helpful in my case. Because I can’t keep monitoring him 24*7. If he is blocked from trading at all then he can’t do anything.

?? The trader in question is an adult, is he not? Why would Sebi allow someone else authority to ban his PAN from anything?

May be for 52 week

my dad is the same. It’s been 15 years. There is no straightforward solution. Maybe through some manipulative tactics , we can change their habits. Like getting them into a positive hobby.

personally left options trading on 14th Feb 2025. It’s been a great decision so far. Completely shifted to swing trading and now trade only in cash. I Avoid Intraday trades too.
