I see this as a very good step for the Indian economy. Indian companies have been lagging behind in terms of new innovation and competitiveness, and have become complacent as they did not face any global challenges. Now that their hands are being squeezed, Indian companies are being forced to think now.
Indian govt is being forced to take steps in the interest of the nation and not just political agendas.
Someone had to come in and say - what is happening in the country is not right. His way of saying may not be right - by using Russian trade as the motivating factor - but it needed to be said.
Lower tariffs, and let competition come in. Let agriculture and dairy competition come in. Till when should we, as a country, hide behind the image that we are a growing poor nation, and seek pity and the need to protect a select group of people. Taxpayers are paying heavily for govt’s political agendas and their planes and cars and houses, but not for roads and electric infra.
Farmers are earning lakhs from agriculture, tax free. This is not an attempt to protect farmers - this is trying to protect the vote bank.
As long as Trump keeps squeezing the hands, the companies and organizations will be forced to change, forced to innovate. Personally I am extremely glad that he is doing this. This will bring pressure to either innovate or dissipate. It also highlights the true picture of how things are. Otherwise everyone wants to think that things are rosy cozy.
At the end of the day tariffs will not impact Indians - Americans will be the ones who pay the import tariffs, but the Indian companies need to start thinking.
Seeing IT as an example - Infosys, TCS - all these are not innovative companies. TCS fired people due to lack of projects, not due to AI. They did not have work for the people. Microsoft fired people as they could be replaced with AI. These two are not the same. Indian companies need to start thinking beyond greed, and think of development.
Trump has not even started to think about service industry tariffs. That is the real nuclear that he could use. Imposing charges on US companies that outsource work to India will cut Indian service export significantly, making the govt rethink everything. Right now govt is still trying to push back and protect the voter bank. When they see the taxpayer suffer and tax income fall, due to loss of jobs and service export fall, they will run to please Trump.
