For most of us, gold was never about chasing returns. It was just… there.
The asset doesn’t demand attention. You don’t track it daily or think about it much. Liquid funds and gold are my “I’ve got you” feeling investments. They’re dependable and just do their job.
Quoting @nithin ’s tweet today:
I’m cherry-picking the date, but it’s kinda crazy that since 2000 gold seems to have generated higher returns than Nifty.
We couldn’t time the launch of the GOLDCASE, Zerodha AMC’s Gold ETF any better
First, gold prices started shooting up and then the stopping of sovereign gold bonds (SGBs). Now that SGB issuance has stopped, Gold ETFs are probably the best way to get exposure to gold.
Gold has been kind to Indian investors and has provided some diversification benefit. Nobody can explain what makes gold prices move, but it seems to work.
Take a look at the charts below:
What do you think? What’s your take and view on gold?

Great read on the comparative performance of gold and the nifty. However i would suggest to not overlook “Silver”.
Although gold has outperformed nifty, investing in silver could have yielded around similar returns.
Silver the “new gold.” I guess its going to be a new hedge soon for the ones like me.
In essence, while gold continues to shine, silver is shining too.
Here’s Silver vs. Nifty:
Btw, our SILVER ETF, SILVERCASE, was listed on March 26th, 2025.
Why was Nifty data not cherry picked and then compared. Why only Gold.
Is it ok to compare two totally separate asset class.
Really? I thought trouble across the world will make people buy Gold to hedge against the portfolio
Returns seem somewhat similar but with great benefit that they seem to go in opposite direction when one falls.
Eventually reverts back to mean, so maybe recency bias is at play too and now everyone loves gold.
Its crazy though, gold does nothing and equity/companies are supposed to create long term value. Why similar returns over such a long period ? Maybe dollar adjusted we haven’t done that well, esp esp after 2008.
That simply cannot be true. Even with cherry picking dates. Where did you get the chart from? Please check your data source. Also, you must compare NIFTY TRI and not NIFTY PRI for a proper Equity vs GOLD comparison.
