I expect 8% too the way things are going. More importantly a very long term multi year trendline is broken. We might have multi year interest rate hikes. View invalid if we go back below 6.5%
same is happening in USA , market is all time high , US 5 years bond yield is 5.26 , better in bond in USA investor feeling
if it touch 8% gsec its a good buy - 10 years peacefull sleep
Then it may impact Indian equities. There are three major hurdles to think about:
- Opportunity Cost: When 10-year G-Sec yields rise, meaning the risk-free return on sovereign debt increases, fixed-income assets become more attractive. Investors may reallocate capital away from riskier equities, such as the Nifty 50, and into debt.
- Cost of Capital & Valuations: Higher G-Sec yields push up the overall interest-rate structure in the economy. This increases the cost of capital for companies and raises the discount rate used to value future earnings. As a result, equity P/E multiples tend to compress, putting pressure on Nifty valuations.
- Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) Flows: When Indian G-Sec yields rise relative to global yields, or when global bond yields spike, FIIs may reduce their exposure to emerging-market equities such as the Nifty and move capital into safer debt instruments.
When a rate cycle starts moving upward, it can usually put pressure on the equity market. I think debt and equity are generally inversely related, although the relationship is not always direct or consistent.
The yield on India’s 10-year G-Sec hovered around 7.22%, extending gains to over two-year highs as expectations of higher debt supply and tighter monetary policy weighed on bond prices.

Nice that you got in at the auction, sandeep. If 7.2% already looks good and 8% is the hope, a middle path for the rest is to split it: some at the next auctions, more if it really gets to 7.8-8%. Waiting for the exact top usually ends with buying nothing. SDLs are worth comparing too, since state loans normally yield a little more than a G-sec of similar tenor. Interest on both is taxed at your slab rate, so in the 30% bracket a 7.2% G-sec nets closer to 5%, and that’s the figure to set against FDs or equity.
I use laddering across different asset categories and maintain a tight position size for each G-Sec with different maturity years. I’m also not in the 30% tax bracket. The interest income goes into equities.
That’s a clean setup, sandeep, and staggering the maturity years takes most of the timing question off the table anyway. Sending the coupons into equities also works as a quiet rebalance, since you add to stocks without ever selling bonds. The one thing I’d settle in advance is what to do when a rung matures in a lower-rate year: rolling it to the far end keeps the ladder’s length, while parking it short slowly turns the ladder into cash.
@DrorH Hope we will be in Highest tax slab when short maturity gsec get matured , then move these amount to more tax efficient one ![]()
Ha, a nice problem to have, sandeep. Only the coupons get taxed along the way, so the principal coming back at maturity is free to go wherever suits the new slab. Worth deciding the destination before the rung matures rather than after it sits in the savings account for a month.
Yield increase to 7.3 , Expecting better Yield in next week Gsec ret auction

Interestingly US yield seems to be drooping
yeah RBI is doing OMO of 25K cr next week, so yield will harden a bit.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on October 9 announced an open market operation (OMO) sale of government securities worth Rs 25,000 crore to absorb surplus liquidity from the banking system
They also increased crr from 90 to 99%.
