There are a couple of methods through which you can do corrections to your PAN details.
Online method
You can correct your PAN details online by visiting the NSDL website: https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html
Do note, you will need your Aadhaar and your Aadhaar registered mobile number to complete the process online.
After visiting the above link, select “Application type” as “Changes or Correction in existing PAN data” and select “Category” from the dropdown.
Fill in the application information details like Title, Surname, Name, Middle name, date of birth, email ID, mobile number, Citizenship status, and PAN number, and click Submit.
After submitting, on a new page, a token number will be generated which will also be sent to your email ID provided. This will be valid for 30 days, and you can complete the application anytime within this period.
To proceed forward, click on “Continue with PAN application form”. You will now see the form to update the details of your PAN.
Select the mode through which you want to submit documents and whether you want a physical PAN or not.
- Select “Submit images through e-sign” if you want to change your photo and signature on PAN.
Then provide your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and your Name.
Fill in the details like Title, Surname, Name, Middle name, the name that you want to be shown on PAN, date of birth, and gender.
- The name you provide in this field should be the same as the proof of identity you will be submitting.
Tick this box and fill in the details if you wish to change your parent’s name.
On the next page, you will have to provide the address for communication, either address of your residence or office.

If you wish to change the address, you can do so by ticking the “If you desire to update your other address, give required details and submit Proof of other Address” field.

The address you provide here should be the same as the address proof document you will be submitting.
If you have been issued any other PAN cards, mention their number and click on Next.
On the next page, you will have to provide details of the documents submitted as proof of identity, proof of address, and proof of date of birth. Along with this, you will have to provide details of who is making the application, and number of documents submitted, and the name of the place.
In the next step, you will have to upload your photo and signature along with supporting documents selected in the above step. Please make sure the files are not password protected.
After you’ve uploaded all the documents, click on Submit.
On the next page, check and confirm all the details you have provided and click on Proceed. After this, you will be asked to make the payment, select your preferred payment method and make the payment.
After making the payment, complete the Aadhaar e-sign to submit your online PAN modification application. The correction process can take up to 7 days.
Offline method
You can also complete the process offline. To complete the process offline, you will have to download the PAN correction form and fill in all the necessary details.
After this, submit the form along with all necessary documents such as proof of identity, proof of address, passport-size photo, etc. at the nearest NSDL collection center. You can search for centers near you here.
After submitting the application and making the payment, you will get a 15-digit acknowledgment number to track the status of your PAN card application

Jegan Kumar - As per Aadhar
Jegan Kumar - As per PAN appearance
Kumar Jegan - As per PAN db and 26as
Passport, bank, voter id, etc. are all as per Aadhar, i.e., Jegan Kumar
Now I want to update the name in PAN database to match my Aadhar name. Essentially swap my first and lastname in PAN db. Is this allowed? Because the 5th letter of Pan number is 1st letter of lastname and if I swap names will it change the pan number itself.
Please advice.
You can change your name, but your PAN number will not change.

I was able to reverse the name.
Now pan card printed name, pan database name both match exactly as per Aadhar
Steps:
- Go here https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html
- Apply Online → Changes or Correction in Existing Pan data → Individual
- Lastname* - Lastname as per Aadhar
- Firstname - Firstname as per Aadhar
- Choose 1st option → Submit digitally through e-KYC & e-Sign (Paperless)
- Check checkbox - Aadhaar Number (Only for Individual)
- Check checkbox - Name As Per Aadhaar (Only for Individual)
- Check checkbox - Full Name of the Applicant
- Type Last Name (same as Aadhar lastname)
- Type First Name (same as Aadhar firstname)
- Name that you would like printed on PAN card * : Firstname Lastname (As per Aadhar)
- Check checkbox - for DOB and Gender
- Enter Dob and gender
- Check checkbox - Photo Mismatch - Automatically checked
- Check checkbox - Signature Mismatch - Automatically checked
- Check checkbox - Details of Parents (Applicable only for Individual applicants) - I expanded parents initials so I did this. Not mandatory
- Check checkbox - Address for communication - Automatically checked - pulls from Aadhar
- Check checkbox - Telephone Number & Email ID details - for mobile number… enter country code (+91) and your Mobile number only. Area /STD code is blank.
- Pay 107rs online
Name got updated in 3 business days.
Got soft copy in email
Physical Card arrived in 1 week
Name in Income tax portal changed after 1 day of receiving soft copy.
All past 26AS forms even from 5-6 yrs ago also show name as per Aadhar
But past filed ITRs all have original name…
DISCLAIMER:
Card has a white space for signature. You have to sign it yourself with a permanent marker pen (Eg. Camlin Finetip Permanent Marker). Ball point pens don’t work. Read online that some idiots don’t recognize this card because it has no printed signature… even though it explicitly says on the card sign in white space… this is something you have to keep in mind… its up to you.
Before doing this by myself online… I went to an e-seva place. Guy was clueless. He told me to goto my bank and update CIF. Didn’t make any sense. Plus my bank cif/account/cheques already have name as per Aadhar.
So I went to another e-seva guy. He was also clueless but told me to go to main income tax office (Aayakar Bhawan) which was an Uber ride away.
At Aayakar Bhawan a customer support person told I should not do this. But person sitting at next desk told its fine.
Like I said its upto you… do your research.
Are you sure choosing new application option on 1st dropdown or last one correction into PAN data?

I just assumed anyone wanting to change name on PAN already has a pan.
So yes, under Apply Online → Changes or Correction in Existing Pan data .
