Exchange has a limit on how much an individual can hold which is based on the total open interest.

At the member level, basically the brokerage that you are trading with cannot really hold more than 15%(across all clients) of the total OI.

At an individual level, according to the NCFM (NSE certification on Financial markets) material, a client can’t hold more than 5% of the total OI of that particular contract.

So if the total OI is 1,00,00,000 contracts you cannot hold more than 5,00,000 contracts.
