Is Donald Trump winning likely to affect the Indian market?

Donald Trump: the Politician

Donald Trump, as the Republican nominee for the US elections, has caused quite a stir. He has repeatedly been outrageous and made racist and other controversial remarks. If he wins and conducts his term in office like his campaign, it is likely that India will be affected.

It is hardly likely that the elections of one of the strongest (if not the strongest) economies in the world could leave India unaffected. But there is likely to be a strong effect one way or the other if Donald Trump wins.

His competitor, Hilary Clinton, is perceived as a candidate who is likely to leave trade relations unaffected and advance foreign relations in the same broad line as her predecessor.

What Would Trump Do?

There are a number of ways Trump’s win might affect the market, some positive, some negative:

He has repeatedly said that Indians are ‘taking away jobs,’ and that he intends to stop this. If he carries his threats forward, the effects are likely to be bad.

If he carries out his threats of reneging on free-trade deals, then this might be a positive for India. If US military personnel are reduced in neighboring East Asia and the Middle East countries, then this will be a good thing for India.

Trump dislikes the Trans-Pacific Partnership, if he goes back on the deal, then India (which isn’t a signatory) will gain more space.

If he reduces support for renewable energy and other investment, then this will be a solid blow to India.

Prediction

On the whole, it seems that Trump’s win would be a good thing for India in certain angles. However, we also have to account for the fact that Trump may well send US’s economy downwards, as he does not appear to have much idea of how the economy and foreign trade works.

If this happens then India, along with the rest of the world, will have to survive the shocks.
