While digital gold offers easy access, flexibility and a low entry point, should an investor consider platform or custodian risks, price spreads, storage or other charges, taxation and limited regulatory protection. How reliable are these platforms, and how do pricing and terms vary? For long-term investing, is digital gold a better option, or should investors compare it with regulated alternatives such as Gold ETFs and gold mutual funds? Does investing small amounts in digital gold make sense for building a gold allocation over time?
TL;DR: Why do you want to invest in Gold ? What is/are the goal(s) ?
Since it is relative,
what other investment opportunities do you have access to?
What is your risk appetite?
What other risks are you already exposed to?
Will investing in gold further concentrate your holdings or diversify?
Yes.
Depends on why one wishes to have access to Gold.
In the potential future scenarios that motivate one to have exposure to gold
identify the risks that wouls have materialised in such scenarios,
and ensure that the instrument/middlemen one uses to obtain exposure to gold is protected from such risks.
Again, depends on why one wants exposure to gold in the first place.
In almost all cases, ETFs are much better than digital gold.
₹100 may be a convenient way to start, but for long-term gold allocation, I personally prefer regulated alternatives. Gold mutual funds can be particularly useful for SIP investors because you can invest a fixed amount regularly without worrying about buying physical gold or managing storage. Gold ETFs are another option for investors comfortable with demat-based investing. For me, consistency through a gold-fund SIP matters more than starting with a very small digital-gold purchase.
Online apps? Make sure they come under SEBI, RBI, etc.
I started with Rs.50 about 3 years ago and had a pause for a couple of years. Now, the same (ETF) costs Rs.100 per unit (my investments doubled too).
These days, I switched to ETF FoF with a minimum of Rs.500 per occasion. If you have regular income, I’d recommend SIP. Some funds allow SIP as low as Rs.100.
I’d stay with my broker and ETFs (including Fund of Funds), rather than online apps.
