Monthly traded value of different segments for NSE, BSE & MCX

Sharing the monthly average traded value trends of different segments of NSE, BSE & MCX for the past ~3 years (Jun’20 - Feb’23).

NSE
Few observations on NSE segments:

  1. Equity futures have traded in a defined range of 1 lac - 1.5 lac crores over the past 3 years.
  2. Options trading turnover has been increasing and the traded value is around 50k crores. This increase can be attributed to the higher preference given to Options compared to equities due to a decrease in leverage given for equities.
  3. Cash segment has seen a slight decline in the past few months
  4. Currency derivative segment has seen an increase in the traded value over the past 3 years

BSE
Few observations on BSE segments:

The currency derivative segment in BSE has seen a significant rise in the past few months whereas the cash segment has been in the same range over the past 3 years. Between April and May of 2022, weekly contracts for BCD trading were introduced, which may have contributed to the increase in currency turnover on the BSE exchange. During this period, the exchange decided to use the same trading symbol for weekly currency contracts as for CDS contracts, which likely encouraged many brokers to begin offering these contracts to their clients.

Kindly note: The currency derivative turnover is notional value and not premium turnover as BSE publishes only notional values. Due to this, the value looks higher. For reference, I have also attached the comparison of the notional turnover of currency derivatives for NSE & BSE.

MCX
Few observations:

The futures segment has seen a slight decline whereas the options segment has seen a significant increase in the overall traded value. This can be attributed to increase in mini contracts of multiple commodities that MCX has been introducing for the past few months.
