Opening a Minor account at Zerodha

Many reached out asking for a guide on enabling their PAN, Aadhaar, and bank accounts for their kids. Here’s all that you need to know about opening a minor account and the necessary link/guide to arrange their documents.

  • The guardian must already have a Zerodha account to open an account completely online; otherwise, they need to follow the offline process mentioned here.

  • Log in to https://zerodha.com/open-account/minor and complete the onscreen instructions.

  • The minor can hold investments (like stocks, mutual funds, etc.) and apply for an IPO, but they cannot buy equity delivery, intraday, or do F&O until they turn 18. The holdings can be liquidated/sold at any time.

  • Once turned 18, the account needs to be converted to a major category by doing fresh KYC.

  • Minor accounts have no account opening charges or Account Maintenance Charges (AMC).

  • To open a minor account, you’ll need the following documents:

    • Birth certificate – must have the minor’s name printed on it.
    • Aadhaar card of the minor.
    • PAN card of the minor (if available).
    • Minor’s bank proof – can be a bank statement, cancelled cheque, or bank passbook with IFSC and account details visible.
    • Guardian’s documents – Aadhaar and PAN (since the guardian operates the account).

If you dont have these documents for minors already, here’s how you can get them.

Get the birth certificate

  • Visit your local municipal corporation or panchayat office to obtain the birth certificate.
  • Ensure the minor’s name is correctly printed on it, as this is needed for Aadhaar enrolment.

Apply for Minor’s Aadhaar

  • Book an appointment online at https://appointments.uidai.gov.in or visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra. (Can’t be done completely online, you’ll have to visit an aadhaar enrollment centre)
  • Fill in the new Aadhaar application for a child.
  • Required documents:
    • Birth certificate of the child.
    • Aadhaar card of either parent (used for verification)
  • The minor must be physically present during the Aadhaar enrolment process.
  • Once issued, you can download the Aadhaar card from the UIDAI portal. This typically takes up to 10 days.
  • There are no charges for applying for a new aadhaar, and it takes less than 30 mins to complete formalities.

Open a bank account for the minor

  • Visit a bank with the minor’s Aadhaar, birth certificate, and guardian’s KYC documents.
  • Open a minor savings account, which will be operated by the guardian until the minor turns 18.
  • Collect the bank proof (statement, passbook, or cheque leaf) to use during the Zerodha account opening.
  • This can be with any bank and typically takes less than 5 days.
