Found this circular for an unusual trading session on Jan 20th. Do we need to do something special if we are using Zerodha / API ? or is Zerodha or the exchanges themselves are taking care of the backend connectivity and switching ?

It’s all transparent to you, the client. What actually happens under the hood is that NSE backend switches to DR, not the NSE API server address. So, they may have load balancer etc which redirects to DR Or IP address is switched to DR or whatever mechanism, but API backend address for Brokers remain the same. So, even broker doesn’t need to worry, least of all the client.
