My original ITR2 was filed on 17th July. But there were mistakes in the original ITR, so a revised ITR was filed on 29th. Original ITR’s processing hasn’t started yet. Yesterday I got an intimation 143(1) regarding successful processing of my ITR. When I checked the computation and acknowledgement number, it was of the revised ITR. But it didn’t mention the form type as revised. It showed it as ITR 2 original. Now I am confused. If my original ITR is processed next, would the system consider that as revised? Or the original ITR will not be processed at all, considering the revised has been processed? Is it expected? What should be my course of action?
In general, if the revised return is filed before the processing of the orginal return, then the revised return would be considered as the final return and will get processed. The original return will be ignored.
Orginal return is filed u/s 139(1) and revised return is filed u/s 139(5), so there won’t be any confusion between the two by the system.
It is strange that the return that was actually processed in your case is the revised return, but the intimation wrongly refers to the original return.
You can check the date of filing too, to confirm if it is the orginal or revised return that was processed.
If the intimation contains the updated details as filed in the revised return, then there is nothing to worry.
It could probably be a technical error from CPC for making a wrong reference to orginal return.
I checked everything including the acknowledgement number and date of filing. It is for the revised return only. Is there any course of action for me? Do I need to submit a grievance?
If the return that got processed is the revised return, then there is no further action required, orginal return will not be touched now.
Anyways, the income tax department would communicate if any further action is required, which I don’t think will happen.
Have you or someone you know experienced anything like this before?
No.
My reply was purely based on my general understanding of the income tax return process.
If it is still bothering you, you could contact them and get clarity.
