Some common FAQs:

What does downward revision (decrease in lot size) mean?

The lot size in which a contract trades is reduced. This reduction in lot size is usually done in such ratios that traders can easily rollover their positions or enter into calendar spreads if they want. If the revision in the contract is not a multiple of the lot size, the contract will not have calendar spreads for the revised month.

What does upward revision (increase in lot size) mean?

The lot size of F&O contracts can also be revised upwards. Here, new F&O contracts of a scrip have the increased lot size but the existing contracts are not affected. Calendar spreads for the revised month are not available in such cases.

Why do exchanges revise the lot size?

SEBI mandates that the contract value of all F&O contracts remain between 5 to 10 Lakhs. In the periodic review (every 6 months), if the contract value of a scrip is beyond this range, there is an upward or downward revision in lot size.

all r halving

Will it happen on 30th beginning of the day or end of the day?

Also, I assume, my quantity of exiting positions will automatically double/half on that day?

How is the contract value calculated and why it is not fixed for all ?

Imagine Tata motors trading at 1000 rs n the lot size kept as it is then the amount of margin required is very huge.

How is the contract value calculated and why it is not fixed for all ?

Contract value = Share price x Lot size

Assume there are two shares, Reliance and Wipro. The share price of Reliance is Rs. 2000 and the share price of Wipro is Rs. 500. To maintain parity in contract values, the lot size is set as 250 for Reliance and 1000 for Wipro.

Now, the contract value for both shares is 5 lacs [i.e. (250 x 2000) or (1000 x 500)]. If the price of Reliance or Wipro now changes, the contract value will also change. It’s not possible to fix the same contract value for all stocks.
