Rising Tax Collections - Giant steps towards becoming a formal economy?

Background - Hardly 50 Lac citizens pay direct taxes ( Less than 1% )

One of the prominent reasons why our country is still carrying the developing nation tag after decades is the distrust between the public and the government when it comes to the matter of Taxation. Citizens don’t comply because of lack of facilities provided by government to them and feeling of not doing much to them in return and the government, in turn, believes that it is unable to do much to the citizens because of the abysmally low taxes that they receive from the citizens.

India has one of the high indirect taxes. Even after the hike in fuel and other prices in Sri Lanka. The fuel and iPhone prices are still lower in that country. India collects the direct tax shortage via indirect tax. But indirect tax affects everyone.

Govt is trying to move away from fossil fuels to green fuel. So fuel taxes are likely to stay.
