Successful traders born or made?

There are some things in life where talent and innate wiring helps like Michael Phelps born with size 14 feet, hyper extended joints, less lactic acid production etc. Successful trading in a tech driven world am positively sure has very little to do with genes. As long as one knows how to use a PC / mobile it’s doable with a workable plan that can be followed day in day out. It’s a skill that can be acquired with genetic support that is far too common.

What about you ? Would love to know your angle on this.

  • Successful traders are born
  • Successful traders are made

As there is no fixed pattern in market like in other fields (lets say music, swimming or any other field), the factor of innate talent is often rare in markets. Only in few cases, it may be possible that the child may be born in a trading family and from childhood has subconsciously learnt the art by observing around.

As this is possible only for few ppl, I feel that the answer is Successful Traders are very much made. Made from making mistakes, blunders, rectifying and making more mistakes etc. It is like making a Diamond out of human ashes

There was an experiment for exactly same question in US year was 1983 , I will give you an Summary of same experiment

  • It was done by two of the greatest traders of that time - Richard Dennis and William Eckhardt

  • Out of all traders selected for the experiment nobody knew how to trade before( at least not to the extent required to handle big money)

  • Selected candidates consist of Harvard MBA , Actor, blackjack player, Former AIR FORCE veteran, medical student , security guard and etc.

After training and providing a systematic approach to all of them they end up making more than $175 million in only five years

Now its true some of them made good money some average and some made a lot but all were profitable

I hope you will get your answer once you stick to a plan and trust yourself

All the successful traders i’ve read about, met or followed, all were from very diverse walks of life. They were Physicists, Doctors, Sociologists, Car Salesmen, Jazz Musicians, Academicians, Athletes, Broke before they “accidentally” landed into trading as a profession.

This kind of diversity is hard to find in many other fields dealing with innate talent. Most scientists never accidentally landed into Science, they mostly loved science since childhood or had some visible affinity towards it, same for Math, same for Professional Musicians and Athletes.

So the " Born Trader" premise is the weaker of the two. That said, one thing that I personally have seen in traders both successful and unsuccessful are that generally slightly “quirky” in their personality and how they think about stuff in general. I have never met a trader who I didn’t feel was a bit “different” in a good or bad way. So maybe this is what is the running thread between all traders. (Its anecdotal, I might be completely “incorrect” here)

But this then begs the question, whether quirky people choose to become traders, or trading makes people quirky. For now I don’t have the answer to this. Food for thought.

I think that successful traders are made and not born. Trading is mostly art with a little bit of science mixed in largely relies on human emotions and psychology. The family environment of the trader does play a role though and if their family life is simple and content then chances are that the person can become a successful trader and if it is disturbed then there will be difficulties.

Similar to many, I too believe that successful traders are made and not born. The patience and discipline required to be a successful trader are learned through experiences. However, practice and consistency differentiate the good and the best trader. There goes a lot behind a successful trader, the temperament, mistakes, emotions, etc. which i guess can only be learnt and cannot be inherited or born with.

IMO successful traders are made, through experience (good/bad) they’ve learnt when to buy, sell and, most importantly, how much to invest. But to think of it, one also needs talent and skill to easily grasp the concepts (which i find it sometimes hard to understand 😅) I guess to conclude, with constant practice this can developed and improved, making you a successful trader.

I believe Luck is deciding factor as well

Yup. I do agree that years of practice and consistency do make one a champ in his game, but once in a while, luck does play an important role. However, still cannot undermine the power of persistence.

Luck tends to find the prepared and persistent mind.

True.

Luck is a byproduct of hard work & good judgement
