True. Just to put some numbers to it based on the estimates I’ve seen:
Tata Sons’ total holdings, including its listed investments and unlisted businesses like Air India, Tata Digital and Tata Electronics, are estimated to be worth around ₹15–16 lakh crore.
For the possible IPO, analysts are estimating a valuation of around ₹9–12.5 lakh crore. On an avg, ₹10 lakh crore is being used as a rough estimate for now.
Noel Tata (Chairman of Tata Trusts) is straight-up calling Chandra’s reappointment as Tata Sons chairman illegal. He voted against it, but the board still went ahead based on a legal opinion that Noel says is wrong.
Tata Trusts, which owns the majority of Tata Sons, is also saying the whole resolution is invalid and that the proper process under the Articles needs to be followed.
Pretty rare to see something like this happen against the wishes of the majority shareholder. Definitely interesting times ahead for the Tata Group!
If Tata Sons gets listed, I think the bigger question is what it changes across the group.
One thing I was thinking about is the cross-holding within the group. Some Tata companies themselves have a stake in Tata Sons, so once Tata Sons gets a market valuation, it could change how investors look at the value of those holdings.
And Tata Sons isn’t just about TCS and the older businesses anymore. A lot of money has gone into Tata Digital, Tata Electronics and Air India too, around ₹31,000 crore into unlisted businesses in FY25 alone. (Source)
So once it’s listed, we’ll probably get a much better idea of how the market views all these newer bets too.
