MIIs have launched a new system where clearing corporations directly transfer securities to investors’ demat accounts, enhancing transparency and efficiency. This replaces the old method of routing securities through brokers’ pooled accounts.
Shares of brokerages and market exchanges dropped due to falling trading volumes and regulatory tightening in futures and options. Angel One lost nearly 9%, while BSE and others also declined as lower cash and derivatives turnover hurt revenues.
SEBI may allow short-selling for all stocks except those in the T2T segment, revisiting its January 2024 move to ban shorting in non-F&O stocks. Brokers worry this ban could hurt liquidity and volumes further. Motilal Oswal has already restricted short-selling in non-F&O stocks.
