Insurtech startups like Policybazaar, InsuranceDekho, and Turtlemint are shifting to offline models by deploying large numbers of physical agents to sell insurance, complementing their digital operations. Policybazaar has 250,000 agents, Turtlemint 400,000, and InsuranceDekho over 200,000, contributing significantly to their revenues and growth. This trend aligns with intermediaries adding 300,000 agents in FY23, far outpacing insurance companies.
Ananth Narayan, a whole-time member of SEBI, said that while the rise of domestic investors in India is positive, the country still needs foreign capital to fund its future growth. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between domestic and foreign investments.
Many microfinance institutions (MFIs) are not taking advantage of the Centre’s credit guarantee cover due to high costs and rigorous audits. While some MFIs believe the current stress is temporary, others are seeking a more tailored scheme. Banks, particularly small finance banks, are more open to the guarantee cover due to higher non-performing loans.
