Key Points

  • The Supreme Court struck down a huge chunk of President Donald Trump’s far-reaching tariff agenda.
  • The law that undergirds those import duties “does not authorize the President to impose tariffs,” the majority ruled six to three.
  • Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the opinion of the court. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh dissented.

Could this have a bigger impact than the budget expectations? I think it’s going to be a big topic on Monday.

What’s frustrating is that we have tens of thousands of employed journalists, analysts, interviewers and content creators in India’s financial news sector trying to catch and alert readers and viewers about important events, but it seems like no one really remembered that this pivotal ruling was today.

I remember reading about the discussions surrounding the ruling a month ago, but I completely forgot about it. It would be great if there was an alert system where you could set reminders for future events like this, so we don’t have to rely on journalists or news media to remind us.

26000… Haha

If it gaps up that high, there’s a very good chance it’ll fall.

I just square off 25700 CE today. Should have waited till Monday.

I’m hoping for a big gap-up — big enough to wipe out the trading accounts of those option sellers and speculators who’ve been shorting everything and trying to hold stock prices down.

Maybe then stock prices can finally get back to what they usually do over time — move higher.

Illusion.

Appreciate the heads-up, watching it now.

Only starts now.

Did he just say extra 10% tariff?

After composing the previous message,

He just now confirmed that tariff with India remains same, need further clarification.

I think India acted too soon to sign off other agreements before the court ruling came out .

India he said “no change. India will pay tariff. US won’t”

He says 10% “over and above” the existing tariffs

His only reason for announcing 10% Tariffs today is that he lost the case and he is posturing to show his ‘power’.

From what I understand the tariffs on India were IEEPA Tariffs, so I am guessing those are not applicable as per court order.

Effective 27 August 2025, articles imported from India will be subject to an additional ad valorem duty of 25%, increasing the cumulative International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariffs on imports from India to 50% ad valorem.

Unless he announces new Tariffs under a different rule looks like India is now Tariff free ?

Good that we got a framework and not a deal.

Now I guess deal should depend on whether Trump can impose any tariffs legally or not.

This issue might stretch on for months.

pretty much all the tariffs are invalid

I think 10% will apply now(as he signed a global 10% here) until he figures out a legal pathway to restore existing tariffs(18%). The problem with “other section” tariffs is mainly that he loses the ability to target specific nations with tariffs. That’s why it’s “Global” 10%. This costs him a lot of bargaining power, as differential tariffs(between nations) are the source of his power. He still has the ability to completely ban all imports from a specific country under the IEEPA tariffs. He can probably threaten to do that to enforce previous trade deals.

the Court said that I’m not allowed to charge even $1 DOLLAR to any Country under IEEPA, … But I am allowed to cut off any and all Trade or Business with that same Country, even imposing a Foreign Country destroying embargo, and do anything else I want to do to them — How nonsensical is that?

now the trump will start his game - market will be swing here and there - oh god
