Under STCG summary in AIS 3 heading - can you give an example

In AIS - I see 3 heading for STCG

  1. Short Term Capital Gain from sale of equity share or unit of equity oriented Mutual Fund (MF) or unit of a business trust on which STT is paid. - This is straight forward …this is an y stock I understand and it is subject to 20% flat rate.
  2. Short Term Capital Gain from sale of shares or debentures of an Indian company - I am not sure what is this? please give an example
  3. Short Term Capital Gain from sale of securities (other than those covered earlier) - again please give an example

Here’s my understanding…

Transactions where STT is not paid.
(eg. Unlisted shares or debentures.).

Catch-all category for short-term gains from other types of securities.
(eg. Debt mutual funds, Gold ETFs, Bonds, …)

so Gsec bonds - are considered debentures ie. comes in category STCG from sales of shares or debentures of Indian company?

or they are in 3rd category …i.e .other than covered earlier?

IMHO, GSECs will be in the 3rd “catch-all” category above

  • not 1st category - as no STT paid.
  • not 2nd category - as not related to indian company.

That said, an official reference to the formal definitions of these various categories being used in AIS will be key to knowing for sure.

All those 3 sections in AIS stcg - does not match brokers’ PNL - particularly 2nd and 3rd category - so where should I look exactly in AIS for feedback/correction?

Maybe consult a CA to ensure that you accurately determine the specific categories of each of your investments. This way you can ensure that the Broker P&L statement does not have any inaccuracies in your case.

There should be an option next to each entry in the AIS to provide feedback on it
(as shown starting 4mins into this video)
