Weekly Trading Diary: 17th to 21st October 2022

Hello and welcome to the weekly trading diary, a thread for discussing your trades, strategies, ideas, news, stories, etc.



A quick look at how the markets fared in the week gone by;

For the week ending October 14th, markets were back in red after posting gains the week before. Nifty and Sensex ended the week down by 0.74% and 0.47%. While the MidCap and SmallCap indices fared much worse, slipping 2.81% and 1.73%.

On the sectoral front, apart from minor gains in the Nifty IT and Nifty Bank index, all major sectoral indices ended the week in the red. Realty, Media and Energy were the top losers, down over 3% each.



Things were also identical on the global front, with most of the major markets ending the week in losses.

Reliance Jio intends to raise an extra $1.5 billion in 5G capex through external commercial borrowings. It is in negotiations with overseas banks including BNP Paribas, HSBC, and MUFG Bank.

Hindustan Unilever is in talks to acquire majority stakes in consumer brands Wellbeing Nutrition and Conscious Food to boost its product range. Conscious Food sells packaged organic food, while Wellbeing Nutrition is a plant-based nutrition company.

Reliance Jio signed a multi-year contract with Nokia to build one of the biggest 5G networks. Nokia will deliver equipment from its AirScale portfolio which includes high-capacity 5G Massive MIMO antennas, RRHs to support various frequency bands & self-organizing network software.

Infosys, TCS, HCL, and Wipro hired just 28,736 people in the second quarter of the current fiscal year (Q2FY23), roughly 50% less than the same period last year on the back of worries of a recession in the United States and a slowdown in Europe: TOI

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt reversed the majority of an economic package launched by the government just weeks earlier, including a planned income tax cut, in an effort to calm financial markets. Hunt also hinted that public expenditure cuts are on the way.

As per the Reserve Bank of India’s State of the Economy report, retail inflation based on the consumer price index, which was 7.4% in September, may have reached a peak and could begin to decline as momentum slows and favorable base effects take effect.

The central government may infuse about Rs 5,000 crore in equity into state-run general insurers to help them meet solvency requirements as they meet higher wage bills.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson stated that the airline’s 'Vihaan.AI’ revival plan aims for a 30% share in both domestic and international markets within the next five years.

Invesco Developing Markets Fund will sell a 5.51 percent stake in Zee Entertainment Enterprises in a block trade for up to $169.5 million. In the transaction, Invesco will sell more than half of its stake in Zee Entertainment, which stood at 10.14% in June.

KKR is in talks to invest in fintech start-up Razorpay and, in a secondary transaction, buy out some of its existing early-stage investors. Along with its other investors, the buyout fund is likely to participate in the company’s primary funding round.

Nifty and Sensex slipped from the day’s highs to close marginally higher. US futures are trading lower, indicating a negative opening for US markets.

Domestic air passenger volume grew 64.61% to 10.35 million in September YoY, as per the data released by the aviation safety regulator DGCA.

According to the latest Justdial Consumer report, Demand for precious metals jumped by 40% YoY ahead of the Dhanteras and Diwali with gold contributing to 70% of the overall demand during this festive season.

USD-INR saw a sharp decline and had the biggest single-day fall in a month on the fears of uncertainty regarding global macros persisting along with the strengthening of the dollar.


Benchmark indices recovered from early morning lows and closed the volatile session marginally higher. Dow and Nasdaq indicate a poor start for US markets.

Vodafone Idea’s board of directors will meet on October 21 to discuss raising funds by issuing preferential convertible debentures to a vendor, which could be Indus Towers, which is owed around Rs 6,800 crore by the telecom operator.

The Competition Commission of India imposed a fine and ordered Makemytrip and Oyo to pay Rs 223.48 crore and Rs 168.88 crore, respectively, for market dominance abuse. The decision was made in response to a complaint filed by the FHRAI.

Shares of Traxcn Technologies debuted at a premium of around 6% over the issue price and closed the session up by over 16%.

The Adani group will invest Rs. 10,000 crore in Ahmedabad airport between 2023 and 2027 to triple its passenger handling capacity. Ahmedabad airport, according to Adani executives, will be transformed into a regional hub connecting airports such as Bhuj, Kandla, Jamnagar, and Bhavnagar.

The US dollar rose as demand for dollars continued to increase as US 10-year bond yields reached a 14-year high. The rupee fell throughout the day, falling from 82 to 83 to the dollar in less than a fortnight. The rupee has fallen 11.68% against the dollar this year.

Benchmark indices lost their gains in the final hour, ending the choppy session flat with small gains. Futures on Dow and Nasdaq indicate a negative start for US markets.

Coal India announced that it had started 17 more first-mile connectivity projects worth Rs. 11,000 crores under the third phase, in addition to the 44 projects already underway under the first two phases.

Google has been fined Rs 1,337.76 crore by the CCI for abusing its dominant position in the Android mobile device market. The regulator also stopped unfair practices, like offering incentives to smartphone makers for exclusively carrying its search services.

The total trade volume of Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) dipped over 11% to 23.1 billion units in the July-September quarter, compared to the year-ago period, due to supply-side constraints as per the company statement.

Retail sales volumes in the United Kingdom fell 1.4% month on month in September, compared to a 0.5% fall expected, as consumers continue to feel the effects of inflation.

U S Treasury yields are reaching multi-year highs, with the 10-year yield reaching 4.276%, its highest level since June 2008, as signs of Fed tightening seem bleak, causing the dollar to remain strong against other currencies such as the Euro, Pound, and Yen.
