Weekly Trading Diary: 19th to 23rd December 2022

Hello and welcome to the weekly trading diary, a thread for discussing your trades, strategies, ideas, news, stories, etc.


Here’s what the markets were up to in the week gone by;

Benchmark indices ended in red for the second week running, Nifty was down around 1.2% and Sensex around 1.36% in the week ended 16th December.

Coming to the performance of sectoral indices, the Nifty PSU Bank index was the sole gainer.




Global markets too weren’t different as all major around the world ended the week in losses.

Hope market’s reaction to interest hikes is over for now and situation is back to normal as it was before.

Otherwise will have to close the profitable trades so that they don’t fall more :roll_eyes:

Benchmark indexes climbed nearly 1%, following positive trends in the global market. Dow and Nasdaq futures point to a good start for US markets.

UTI Asset Management Company surged 10% amid reports that the Tata Group is in talks to buy a majority stake in the company from PSU finance entities.

Edelweiss Alternatives-backed Infrastructure Yield Plus Strategy company to acquire a 100% stake in L&T Infrastructure Development Projects at an enterprise value of Rs. 6,000 crore.

Sugar production in India till December 15 was higher by 5.1% YoY at 82.1 lakh tonnes with the state of Maharashtra leading with a production of 33 lakh tonnes of sugar, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 20.3 lakh tonnes: ISMA

Indian IT was the weakest sector in an otherwise strong market as American IT firm Accenture kept its FY 2023 revenue guidance unchanged which was below market estimate due to reduced IT spending caused by macroeconomic headwinds and prevailing uncertainty.

According to the Income Tax Department of India, gross direct tax collections for FY22-23 surged by 25.90% at Rs. 13,63,649 crore as of December 17, 2022 whereas advance tax collections, paid by companies and certain individuals, have gone up 12.8% to over Rs. 5.2 lakh crores.

The NTPC Group, including joint ventures and arms, has reached the milestone of 3GW of operational renewable energy capacity with the commissioning of the first part capacity of 100 MW of the 300 MW Nokhra Solar PV Project in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

The revenue of Indian PCS market, including IaaS, PaaS solutions, and SaaS, totaled $2.8 billion for the first half of 2022 and the Indian public cloud service market is expected to be worth $13 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 23.1% for 2021-2026: International Data Corporation.

The total outstanding dues of power distribution utilities (DisComs) have been reduced by Rs 29,857 crore to Rs 1,08,092 crore since June 3, 2022, on the back of implementation of the Electricity (LPS and Related Matters) Rules, 2022: Ministry of Power.

The Adani group has announced that it will invest Rs 10,700 crore in the expansion of Lucknow airport to meet the increasing annual passenger handling capacity from 4 million passengers per year (MPPA) to 39 MPPA.

SEBI increased the minimum utilization amount for buybacks from 50% to 75%. It will permit an upward revision of the buyback price through tenders until 1 working day prior to the record date, and the deadline for completing buybacks via tender offers had been reduced by 18 days.

Japanese 10-year govt bond yields rose to their highest since 2014, and the Yen hit a 4-month high, after Japan’s central bank BOJ announced a surprise policy change, widening the allowable band for long-term yields to 50 bps either side of its 0% target from 25 bps previously.

India’s auto components industry witnessed a 34.8% growth to Rs. 2.65 lakh crore in first-half of 2022-23 on the back of domestic demand, particularly from the passenger vehicles segment: ACMA

According to Colliers India, the leasing of office space across six major cities is expected to rise 52% to 50.1 million square feet in 2022 on better demand but absorption may fall to 35-38 million square feet next year due to cautious corporate spending.

The number of loans sanctioned by local non-bank lenders fell year on year in the three months ending 30 September, due to a drop in demand for commercial loans. In the September quarter, aggregate sanctioned loans fell 3% year on year to Rs 3.7 lakh crore: IFCI

The primary market in India will pick up steam as more firms prepare to go public. Out of the offer documents filed by firms with the markets regulator, 55 have got clearance to raise a total of Rs 83,481 crore, while 32 are awaiting approval to raise a total of Rs 54,415 crore: Prime Database.

UK govt borrowed more in November, with the budget deficit reaching a record high of £22 billion, nearly tripling the £8.1 billion reading from a year ago, due to mounting pressure from rising debt-interest payments and the huge cost of subsidizing energy bills for consumers and businesses.

Reliance Retail a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, announced the acquisition of 100% equity stake in Metro India which is a multi-channel B2B cash-and-carry wholesaler with over 3 million B2B customers for a cash consideration of Rs. 2,850 crore.

Tata Communications has acquired The Switch Enterprises, New York-based end-to-end live video production company in an all-cash deal for Rs. 486 crore.

Maruti Suzuki India signed a five-year pact with Kamarajar Port for export of around 20,000 of its passenger vehicles annually to international markets.like Africa, Middle East, Latin America, ASEAN, Oceania and SAARC regions

Sula Vineyards made a tepid market listing at Rs. 361 against the issue price of Rs. 357 and closed 7% lower.

The Russian ruble hit a 7 month low of 72 against the dollar due to sanctions on Russian oil and gas which are hitting the country’s exports and weighing on its currency.

Benchmark indices saw a sharp sell-off with Nifty plunging below 18k and Sensex below 60k. Dow and Nasdaq futures are trading higher, indicating a good start for US markets.

India’s retail industry saw a rise in sales by 19% from April to November 2022 compared to pre-pandemic levels, with the eastern part clocking 21% and Northern India gaining 19% riding on the back of strong performance of sectors like fast-service restaurants and footwear: RAI

Abans Holdings had a tough debut on the exchanges. The shares of the company plunged over 19% on the first day of trading.

Vedanta announced that the company has been declared as a preferred bidder for Bicholim mineral block in Goa which has resources of 84.92 million tonnes.

BHEL announced that the company has entered into an agreement with Sumitomo SHI FW for the design, engineering, manufacturing, erection, commissioning, and sale of circulating fluidized bed combustion boilers in India and overseas markets.

Meta Platforms agreed to pay $725 million to settle a long-running lawsuit alleging that Facebook illegally shared user data with the research firm Cambridge Analytica. This is the largest recovery ever achieved in a data privacy class action.

You are writing that dow and nasdaq are trading lower, but the graphs you have shared below are showing that both futures are trading up in green colour. So which one is correct btw?
