What can India do as we navigate this uncertain world order?

Yesterday, @TIMEFRAME shared an interesting thread by Sridhar Vembu, founder of Zoho, on what India should focus on as the global order continues to shift. His thoughts are quite relevant.

One line that stuck with me was “Energy is food.” Makes you think, because modern farming depends so much on fossil fuels for fertilisers, tractors, and more.

He says the flood of Chinese goods is more desperation than aggression and suggests settling trade in rupees. Also talks about building factories and sharing our R&D with poorer nations as part of our dharma.

Here’s the thread, worth a read:

What do you all think of this? Curious which of these ideas resonate most with you.

I can resonate with almost all of it.

But the thing that struck me the most, was the idea of sharing

As poorer nations face stress, India also must grow more food so we can aid other nations facing food crises.

India must liberally share the light of knowledge - gained from our R&D investment - with poorer nations. They do not have the vast human resources to invent that we do and when we start inventing, we must share rather than hoard. That is the only way to a more just and more stable global order

If this was achievable, the world would be a much better place (eutopia).

Sharing necessities, be it food, medicine or technology with poorer nations, be it completely free or at a reasonable price, would make a great difference in the lives of many, provided the people in power are not corrupt, for this to actually deliver the intended result.

But, we need to first achieve Self-sufficiency in such areas, in order for this to be possible, while not compromising on Sustainability in doing so.

Self sufficiency = Security and stability

The current tariff drama, is the perfect example of what happens when you are import dependent for your necessities. Trump is either playing a bluff to negotiate favorable deals, to reduce trade deficits or is actually pushing America to be self-sufficient at least for its necessities.

You could have all the money in the world, but you can’t eat it.

We’re lucky to have a strong, stable government and a Prime Minister with global respect. That gives us a significant edge in navigating choppy waters.

Hi Thank you for posting , i would like to post some interesting links over here, If we look at Sridhar Vembu 's comments as a Indian perspective , at the same time what is other Nations perspective with regards to Tariff war , here is the 2links , one is of Prime Minister of Singapore other is from the USA , Howard Mark one of the Successful Trader,
After watching these two Videos , both are thinking & comparing the US condition to of Pre World war period , in those day’s America was an isolationist , made fortune during world war by selling goods to Waring nations, But my opinion is that , American interest in Tariff war is Targeted at China only and wants to revive their manufacturing capabilities  So world order is changing , may be lot many regional powers will emerge .

Very impressed with the Singapore PM Mr.Wong’s address.

Such a calm demeanor and articulate delivery.

Wish our leaders use the parliament for productive talks, and as a means to address the nation on important developments, rather than for bickering.

He brilliantly put it that, “Tariffs are a negotiating tools/tactic for the US to extract concessions

Despite being a smaller country, it has done amazingly well, and is one among the major financial hubs.

Loved how Howard Marks explained the idea behind foreign trade.

Every country, does some things better and some things worse.

The Welfare of the world gets maximized, when every country does the things they are good at, at a cheaper price and sells (export) to others.

You export what you are good at, and import the ones that you aren’t.

And i assume, being good or not so good here, can be in terms of both the quality and price.

And the primary reason behind such foreign trade is to curb inflation, by buying cheap, rather than producing it at a higher price domestically.

Something Trump doesn’t seem to get.

Also, he explained the US debt crisis beautifully

The US has got like a golden credit card :credit_card:, with no upper limit, which it never has to pay back.

And it can spend more than it makes because of this.

I believe, it’s enjoying these privilege, primarily because the dollar is being used as a global reserve currency, which kinda always keeps it in demand.

De-dollarization is the key, and probably the next big shift that needs to take place, to prevent the world order from being ruined by some Man-child.

Yes its a shame How Indian MP’s shout while PM or any other Ministers address the Parliament, for most of the countries like Singapore or European countries their country is first , not petty politics like the Indian MP’s do ,

I think Trump is not reckless like many people say , he is a Business man , If you go through his speeches made during election campaigns he talked about the US debt , actually US debt mess up & mishandling was by Democratic presidents Like Obama & Joe Biden , so he dumped useless Ukraine Russia war , now for US , its real enemy is China

True. Trump approached things with a business lens, and he was one of the few who kept hammering on the debt issue publicly.

The real challenge with China was never just trade it’s tech, influence, and long-term positioning. And on that front, the US lost time while playing tough guy.

Yes of course Chinese are also Traders but their approach to trade is not of Rule based but muscle flexing , they keep quiet when they are weak, where as American approach was Rule based but due to "Left Leaning " presidents , especially Presidents from Democratic party of America , US debt Sky rocketed and Americans are losing their Edge , So some Americans sensed this losing edge, so the Tariff war !1

I have posted here about the Tariff war on the perspective of other nation view as well as the view from the USA itself , Trump way of Straight forwardness , wonderful way of Bashing media people especially on Left leaning media channels made him a lot of enemies , but at least he put his effort to do the thing’s what he is saying , Set aside our prejudice about what the US president is doing and set aside by looking by the Indian perspective , i came across a video of Trumps speeches , for me it;s clear that it all started the so called “out sourcing” era of 2000, i came across an article written in Business standard way back by an eminent Software pioneers of the 2000, once the stock market darling of the company i-flex solutions , Rajesh Hukku has written the article with Heading " It’s Cool to be a Coolie" reminds of me of the American so called export of Dirty Job’s are led to this Tariff war.
here is the link for the speeches made by the Trump , an insight what he is going to do :slightly_smiling_face:
