Tape reading is a way of trading where you just look at price and volume and trade the markets. A trader would essentially just look at the market depth window and nothing else.
It is a way of trading, similar to technical analysis or Fundamental, there are some traders who can proficiently trade just looking at price volume, so it is helpful to the traders who have the skill and not really the market.
