I had a decent win rate but my account wasn’t growing the way the win rate suggests it should. Someone told me to properly calculate position size before trading instead. I sort of get it but want wasn’t sure
After focusing on my R:R and position sizing i can say i am really making money after 3 years of trading.
Win rate alone can be misleading. You can win 7 out of 10 trades and still lose money if the three losses are much bigger than the winners.
R-multiple puts every trade on the same scale. If you risk ₹1,000, then a ₹2,000 profit is +2R and a full stop-loss is -1R. That makes it easier to compare trades even when the position sizes differ.
I track both win rate and R in EdgeLog. Win rate tells me how often the setup works, while average R shows whether it actually has an edge. You really need both, but R gives the more honest picture.
Completely agree R is the honest one. Win rate is the metric that feels good and R is the one that pays rent. The combo I’ve found most useful is win rate + average R + R distribution (not just the average) a single +8R outlier can flatter your average R while the median trade is actually bleeding. Median R told me more than mean R ever did.
Funny you mention EdgeLog I ended up coding my own journal because I’m a dev and wanted custom behavioural tags (revenge-trade flag, time-of-day buckets). How’s EdgeLog treating you? Curious what made it stick for you vs a sheet.
Good point about median R. I hadn’t really looked at it that way, but you’re right, one big winner can make the average look much better than the actual trading.
Honestly, EdgeLog stuck because I’m lazy with spreadsheets I would update them properly for a few days and then stop. Here it’s easier to keep track of the trade and note things like early exits, revenge trades or unnecessary adjustments. It also has behavioural tags and time-of-day tracking too and a personal AI coach to give complete analysis/breakdown of your trades. Your custom journal sounds quite solid though but you should give it a try to find out more.
