Nifty Is Down 26% From Its High

Agree, but it’s impossible to have exponential growth companies with newer inventions here. This growth is mostly because of macro tailwinds(like demographic growth for example). Even then, growth almost half of it, is just inflation. A dead fish can swim downstream, but it needs a live fish to swim upstream.

if you ask me the same question, I would still invest in NASDAQ mf, because even if it corrects, I know newer and innovative companies would take it’s place in the future rather than old oligarchs here. I would like to invest in things that have significant R&D rather than in companies that made it only by sucking the life of common people.

A 26% fall is painful, but historically, deep Nifty drawdowns have eventually been followed by recoveries. And I too hope that the best is yet to come.

Depending on how deep one thinks,
the inspite and because often end-up interchanging.

With this investment objective, mapping R&D to US/NASDAQ is IMHO gross oversimplification.

Makes it sound like that’s a bad thing. Maybe it is. Maybe it’s not.

Here’s a previous discussion that touched upon both these aspects.

I wonder how much of such thoughts/preferences we have,
are simply one’s disguised risk-appetite.

What’s risk-appetite got to do here?

Right, so one starts with a contrarian mindset.
Quite the opposite of what the market-controlling amounts of “old-money” does.
i.e. one does not follow the idiomatic approach of…

Better the devil you know, than the devil you don’t

:information_source: Note: There is no moral judgement above.
If it helps avoid being side-tracked, can replace “devil” with “unknowns” in the above idiom -

“[It is] Better [to face] the known unknowns, than [to face] the unknown unknowns.”

Assuming that by adopting the contrarian approach,
if one ends-up with some signficant amount of wealth, …
(if one doesn’t then it’s a moot point, as not a significant participant)

…the rational response then biases one towards
more risk-averse/conservative/capital-preserving strategies (than before),
i.e. even starting with a contrarian world-view,
one eventually ends-up with the idiomatic world-view oneself.

Q. Knowing the above, how does it affect one’s current world-view / investment objective?

BTW, one way to deal with unknown unknowns is described in the Cynefin framework -

If you have historical data characterized by high volatility, and current unpredictable patterns

  • Use the “Probe-Sense-Respond” approach of the Cynefin framework
    (to handle “Complex” scenarios)

Source: When one is operating on incomplete information…

…which takes us full-circle back to inspite vs because.

Man, If you had just said more growth more money that would make more sense than this.

Nasdaq is dominated by the big tech companies. Same companies shoving adverts everywhere ( just saw rummy advert in youtube app itself), prioritizing profits over children well being, enshittifying more and more, making everyone lose their attention span. They make money from scams indirectly through (unregulated ?) advertisement.

And now they are using profits towards what looks like an unsustainable bubble, while increasing the cost of many many essential things and resources to absurd levels. They have made internet a worse place chasing this, while stealing away work of others and trying to replace them ( which they probably cant in many places because AI is not intelligent or creative yet - its pretty useful in many things yes ).

To me, US tech rally seems to finally be moving towards a bubble. Not an expert, but that’s what it seems. Ofc they make a lot of money, so its not as simple but AI investments seems to be developing into one.

@BB789 what happened? You have become super pessimistic over last couple of months.

Also, I am surprised you are only now discovering that India isn’t doing R&D, ease of doing business is not there and is full of Oligarchs who suck life out of common people

This was always the case with India. Market will recover (maybe in few months or few years) and all of this will be fogiven

You are not paying attention if you thought I wasn’t pessimistic before. I always was, but after march low and recovery I became a neutral from a price point of view but still super pessimistic on Indian government policies, and subsequently the economy. If nifty breaks last low again, I’ll become a full fledged bear. If not, I’ll play wearing a bull mask

Just asking, your financial year end closing target must have shifted from 27k. What it is now?

Hasn’t changed for now. Have to wait till Nov 15 to check the earnings.

Obviously I wasn’t expecting Iran war. And after it started, I wasn’t expected it to last this long.
