What are T-Bills?

T-Bills are short-term debt instruments issued by the RBI on behalf of the government. These are issued across maturities of 91, 182, and 364 days.

T-Bills don’t pay interest, instead, they are issued at a discount and redeemed at par. For example, if you invest in a 364-day T-Bill this can be issued at Rs. 94 when it matures, you will receive Rs. 100. The difference of Rs. 6 being your return.

T-Bills open for investing on Mondays and close on Tuesdays. You can invest in T-Bills and other government securities on Kite.

@ShubhS9, like when we pledge G-secs:

a) T-Bills will also get unpledged 30 days before their maturity?

b) a new T-Bill issue might take a month or so to get approved for pledging by the Clearing Corporation?

Can you clarify what happens to the pledged T bills at maturity?

Pledged T-Bills will be unpledged 30 days before maturity. Upon maturity, these will be debit from your account and maturity amount will be credited to your primary bank account.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Just wondering that cash margin comes down all of a sudden at auto unpledging and one may end up paying interest for the shortfall in cash margin on FnO.

If one buys T bills which are available on Zerodha today, will they be available for pledging immediately upon allotment? Each weekly iussuance of T bills have a separate ISIN number?

These will be available for pledging once approved by the Clearing Corporation (CC), their list of approved securities is updated once per month.

Yes.

There was one discussion that mentioned that T-bills can be pledged without waiting for CC approval. I am not able to find that reference now. @ShubhS9 please confirm.
