Came across this slide which shows the % share of index funds and ETFs in the US stock market. Notice the steady growth of of Index funds vs active funds. Last year alone there was a net inflow of $504 billion into passive funds vs a outlfow of $340 billion dollars. Passive funds make up 28% of all assets under management in the US.
AMFI doesn’t break the number for Index funds in India but CRISIL put the market share at 3.5%.

I just checked the AUM of the top Indian ETFs and those in the US and the numbers are just ridiculous.
When the trend of passive investing is on the rise in developed markets I was wondering why the opposite in India.
