Why the final weeks of January have two Bank Nifty expiries

Currently, the options contracts of Bank Nifty have weekly and monthly expiries. The weekly expiry is on Wednesday of each week, while the monthly expiry is on the last Thursday of each month.

For the January expiry, the monthly contracts of Bank Nifty will expire on the last Thursday of the month, which is on the 25th and the last weekly expiry for January will be on Wednesday, 31st January.

Whenever there is a monthly expiry, there are no weekly expiry contracts for trading as the monthly expiry contract also doubles up as a weekly expiry contract.

On Kite, the monthly expiry contracts don’t have an expiry date in the scrip name and will be displayed as shown in the picture below. You can check the expiry date in the market depth window.
